In a game in which the Owls stranded nine runners on base, right fielder Brendon Sanger delivered the timely hit to ensure the Owls would walk off the diamond as 3-2 victors over conference opponent Charlotte (8-23-1,1-12) on Friday night.

“They were throwing me a lot off-speed pitches throughout the night,” said Sanger who went 1-3 with two RBIs while drawing two walks. “Just fortunate enough he hung a change up.”

The Owls had several opportunities to put runs on the board throughout the game but were unable to push runs across the plate. With the bases loaded in the second inning, Charlotte outfielder Des Roberts made a diving catch to keep the Owls from scoring the game’s first runs.

“That’s been our luck lately,” said Sanger. “That kid made a heck of a play. Kerr hit it pretty good.” Austin Gomber started the game for the Owls, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and giving up two runs – zero unearned .

After Gomber allowed two runs to score in the third inning, the Owls chipped at the lead before walking away with the win.

In the fifth inning second baseman Stephen Kerr scored on an error. In the sixth inning, Tyler Rocklein’s leadoff double was eventually followed by a sac-fly from CJ Chatham scoring him to knot the game at two runs a piece.

Bo Logan picked up his second win of the year going two innings while giving up zero hits.

“With our record - falling towards the bottom - every game is huge now,” said Sanger. “Every single one.”

FAU, which improved their mark to 18-15 and 6-10 in league play tonight, will face the 49ers in game two of the series tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
