After taking the first two games of the series, Sunday fun day for the Owls turns into a disaster as Charlotte (9-24-1, 2-13) routes FAU 11-1 to avoid the sweep and invoke a rare 10-run mercy rule.

FAU starting pitcher Drew Jackson was chased early going two and two-thirds, giving up five hits, three earned runs while walking three and recording one strikeout. The loss was his first of the year in his debut season for the Owls pushing his record to 4-1.

The relief pitchers fared no better allowing 11 hits, and seven runs in 4.1 innings.

A strong point all season, the pitching staff turned in their worst performance of the year at home allowing 16 hits and 11 runs. Both the most allowed at FAU Baseball stadium for the year.

A reason for the performance was the Owls inability to close the inning as ten of the 49ers runs came with two outs.

The Owls (19-16, 7-11) had their chance during the fifth inning to get back in the game with the bases loaded, but mustered only one run in the frame.

“We’re not a good offensive club,” said Coach McCormack of the team’s two hit performance. “We don’t score a bunch of runs. They’re guy did throw well but we’ve got to be able to put something on the board.”

The loss to the 49ers ends the Owls two game winning streak and coach McCormack sees the significance of letting a conference game get away as the season winds down.

“We’ve put our self in a situation where two-out-of-three is not good enough,” said coach McCormack, frustrated of his team’s performance in conference play. “We’ve got to be better.”

During the series Mitch Morales hammered in his first two RBIs of the year, hinting that he may be a solution to the Owls’ woes on offense.

The Owls next game will be against in-state foe Miami before a three-game series vs conference rival FIU.

"A lot of local flavor," grinned coach McCormack on next week's games. "Its a big week."
