Notes

Owls

FAU completed a three-game season sweep over nearby rival Miami on Wednesday night with a 7-4 victory after cruising through Marshall in all three last weekend (3-2, 8-6, 17-3).

Florida Atlantic short stop Tyler Frank was chosen as First Team All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings on Wednesday, as the publication’s top shortstop at the midseason point of 2018.

Frank’s first-inning double against the Hurricanes brought him equal to the program single-season mark for consecutive games with a hit, now up to 24. He will have the opportunity to take sole possession of that record on Friday night in the series opener.

Coach McCormack will employ the same lineup this weekend as last, with Jake Miednik taking the hill under the lights, followed by Vince Coletti on Saturday, and Mike Ruff in the finale.

The Owls currently sit one game back from first place in the C-USA standings, trailing top performer Louisiana Tech.

49ers

Charlotte will bring their C-USA leading .299 team batting average to Boca Raton looking to snap the Owls' four game winning streak and ending a three game slide of their own. The 49ers saw a season-low three hits in a 2-0 loss at UNCG on Tuesday night and dropped thier weekend series against UAB (7-1, 10-18, 3-4).

Junior catcher Harris Yett continues to lead the conference hitting .393 on the year while infielder Jackson Mims sports a .365 average good for third.

Last time in Boca Raton, the 49ers needed a 5:09 marathon spanning 15 innings before scoring a 7-6 win to take the series two years ago. Reece Hampton provided the RBI single in the top of the 15th while former 49er Holden Capps through a two-hit shutout over the final 7.1 innings.

On the hill, the 49ers have given up a league high 23 long balls and have a combined ERA of 5.20.

Owls take series opener from 49ers

Florida Atlantic continued to produce home runs in a 5-2 win over visiting Charlotte on Friday night.

They nearly needed only one pitcher to do so, as Jake Miednik made it two batters into the 9th inning before giving way to Drew Peden, who came in to close it out and retired the only three batters he faced.

Each team registered seven hits for the contest, but the Owls received a big blow in their first turn at the plate from Pedro Pages who sent a three run shot over the fence to bring in David Miranda and Tyler Frank.

Frank was unable to produce a hit, leaving him tied with Kevin Connacher ('94) for the program mark of 24 consecutive contests.

Later in the 6th, after the 49ers plated a run, a second long ball from Miranda effectively put the game away.

Charlotte scored the game's final run in the 9th before Peden took the mound.

The Owls have now won five in a row and will look to lock up the series tomorrow at 4:00 PM with Vince Coletti (1-2, 4.11) on the hill.

Jake Miednik was on tonight . Held a very good hitting team down to two runs over eight innings. Nice, early run support.

Eric Rivera closes out first the Owls first extra inning game of 2018 with 11th inning homerun.

Zach Schneider gets the win, tossing three solid innings (his longest outing) with just one hit and the Owls add three more long balls to their tally, which is increasing nicely.

Of note, all 10 FAU runs in the series have come on home runs (5).

Vince Coletti threw a quality start in his longest appearance as an Owl as well, 6 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and just one run.

“We needed it,” said Head Coach John McCormack of Rivera’s game-winner. “We weren’t able to put anything together. Offensively we need to do better. I thought we pitched fine … I’m glad we won, but we have to be better in a lot of facets of the game.”

Tomorrow's contest has been pushed up to a 10:00 AM start.

Another sweep. This team has really performed well. The hitting has really improved. If we still had Marman, we would be the #1 team without question. As we stand now, I feel us and SoMiss are 1A ans 1B. Our mid-relievers have done an outstanding job taking on the Sunday job and mid-week starts.  Remember UNCC is a very good offensive team and our staff held them down. Great week end.

Baseball completes the SWEEP of Charlotte

The Owls (24-8, 9-3) took their second consecutive victory in their last at-bat, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to score five unanswered runs in sweeping Charlotte with a 6-5 Sunday victory at FAU Baseball Stadium.

“The best thing that I can say is we won,” said Head Coach John McCormack. “That was an ugly Sunday game. We hung in there, got some big hits. Really good baserunning, which sometimes goes unnoticed. Diamond (Johnson) came up with a big hit, Sandy (Blake Sanderson) did OK, (Marc) Stewart got three outs for us, and then I thought Mark Nowatnick pitched really well. Made it interesting there at the end, but we end up getting the win.”

Charlotte (15-16, 5-7) scored the first three runs of the game and led 5-1 midway through the fifth. An unearned FAU run on an error in the home fifth cut it to three, and the Owls knotted things up in the sixth. Diamond Johnson’s double scored Kevin Abraham, with Richie Nizza coming in on the same play via a 49ers error, and the tying run came across on a Joe Montes RBI single.

Mark Nowatnick came on in relief for the seventh and needed just 12 pitches for a perfect frame. Though Charlotte had two hits in the eighth, a flyout ended that threat, setting up the game-winner. Tyler Frank led off the FAU eighth with a single, and a hit-by-pitch of David Miranda put two on with one out. A fielding error – the fifth of the game by the 49ers – loaded the bases, and Cody Wilson lofted a flyball to center deep enough to score Frank for the go-ahead run. In the ninth, with runners on the corners and two outs, Nowatnick finished off an eight-pitch at-bat by striking out Tyler Elwood to cement the sweep.

FAU next travels west to take on Florida Gulf Coast in a non-conference midweek matchup Tuesday. First pitch in Fort Myers is set for 6:30 PM.

No official statement about Marman, but I don't think we will see him again this season.  Rick, MLB…has there been an official statement ?
