SMU is from what conference? I don't remember them in an NCAA tournament. I can't imagine that this job would be a step up for Doherty unless it's more $$.

SMU is in C-USA. Rumor has it that they can offer 500k which would certainly be a significant raise.

With that said; an interview doesn't mean an offer; and an offer doesn't mean acceptance of a position. His name has been mentioned with practically every openning this off-season and he isn't gone yet, so . . . . . . .

Sure hope they go in another direction on who to hire and Doherty can stay another year or two. Glad to see them mention Angelos gave him formal permission to interview for the job. Like it or not SMU is a big step up-CUSA gets multiple bids to the Big Dance whereas the Sun Belt/ASUN get only one. Not to mention much more money and being in a major city would make this very tempting for Doherty is the job is offered. Hope he stays but I have a bad feeling he wont.

Its not over till its over but if he does leave, what FAU got out of it was 5 recruits that they probably couldn't have gotten without Doherty. I'm sure these guys will not be happy.
As far as CUSA, I'm sure if Doherty has enough success with the program, he could move just the basketball program to ACC or Big East. Does the Sunbelt require all sports to be in the conference? The Big East doesn't with Notre Dame.

He won't get offered the job. Fran Frashilla is higher up on the totem poll then he is. He may interview but he won't get an offer. He hasn't done enough yet. The Asun is the least respected conference in the country and he got knocked out in the first round and didn't win the conference. I love doherty but he hasn't done anything to justify a higher a well known school.

If Doherty is un happy in his current job then let him go. Otherwise the school ends up with another Sidney Green, a coach that does the minimum requirements of his job just to get by.

I don't know why I seem to be the only poster defending Doherty in any way but it seems that anyone has the right to interview for other positions, it doesn't mean your definately going to take it or even truly want to leave. Put yourself in the same position in your job, you get a call for an interview for a postion the increases your salary 2 or 3 times your current income. You might not be willing to take the chance based on many different factors but I bet you would at least show up for the interview.

There is no way you can compare this to Sidney "The Lame" Green - Doherty was approach to interview for the position at SMU, he did not go out of his way seeking this interview. Doherty still has value as a coach and this is an opportunity for him to see just what he may be worth, either now or in the near future. This is still early in the process, sure Doherty could have easily decline the offer to INTERVIEW, but this is a step-up from FAU, we are not the mighty, yet. With Doherty at the helms for a few years, we have POTENTIAL to become a more respected program and I don't hold anything agaisnt him for listening to what SMU has to offer and see if he might be a good macth for them.

Only Doherty can make the proper decision that is best suited for him and his family. I would love for him to stay and build on what he already done, becuase it is far more then "The Lame" Green has ever done for this program.

I guess what I was trying to say is being happy in your job goes along way. Some might even forgo more money to have that.

On the other hand some one who is not happy with his or her job needs to find another place to go. I've worked with many people who were not happy with their current situation. Their performance was a reflection of it.

I don't know what the situation was with Doherty and the SMU interview, but if he is not content, its best to give our blessings and let him find a place that is right for him.
