In my opinion there is a difference between a coach that has been loyal to the team for 18 years and someone who has been there for a couple of years.
Agree!
AND, you have to consider the state of the program itself and how the change would affect the team moral, and composition (players leaving)…
BUT, i can see the other argurment as well…
However, in this case, i think that the "best weighed" decision considering all angles would be to promote…
JMO though!

Less than a month and a half ago when some of us started to petition for Balado, we were laughed at…….well isnt it funny how the tables turn?
This isn't even remotely close to the same thing. Coach Mac is WAAAAY more qualified than Balado is to run a program.
With that said, I take the same position I did with the basketball coaching job…and really with any coaching job. You interview as many qaulified candidates as possible and pick the best one. If that happens to be the assistant on staff, great. Doing anything less would be doing a disservice to the program.

But
more-so in basbeall than in basketball, we are a strong program, not an up and coming program. We have been established as a strong program year in and year out. Unfortunatly that being said, yes we should look for the best qualified canadete, jsut like in basketball. At the end of the day, whatever Mac's unoffical title was with the program he was the assistant coach, and thus has no head coaching expierence.
and to continue playing devil's advocate…..if he was so very prepared why hasnt anyone else came after him in the past 18 years?
now back to the way my heart feels, i hope they give the spot to Mac, i think it will be good for the team, but jsut keep all this in mind when everyone begins to complain about opening the job up.

never said that Mac might not deserve it, then again never said that Balado doesnt deserve it either….

We don't know that he hasn't had opportunities to go elsewhere over the past 18 years. Perhaps he just didn't want to go any place else. His wife works for the athletic department, so that may be a reason too. But you do raise a valid point about the lack of experience as a head coach. It was a definate concern with the basketball opening and i'm sure that Angelos and Brogan have similar concerns with the baseball job.

You're spot on in my opinion. I love Mac, but a new fresh start might be what this program needs. If you don't think we "need" any new fresh start, take a look at our record the past 3-4 years.
Not saying Mac isn't or couldn't be an excellent coach, but when you open this up on a nation wide level, this is a very attractive job and who knows what kind of candidate would throw their hat into the ring.
Like things, love people.
