Speaking of recruiting and scholarships…

The Owl Scholarship Fund (OSF) does not even come close to funding the necessary scholarships for a Div 1 Program.

If you are not a member, please join.

If you give $100 per year, try to give $200. If you give $1000, try to give $1500. If you give $50,000, try to give $100,000.

Any amount counts. If it has to be $10, give $10.

Contact Stephen at 561-297-0218 to donate.

+1,000.  I doubled my commitment today from what I gave last year.  Just so you know they will set up a payment plan. So if you donate $500 they will charge your credit card $50 month to pay it and give you the full benefit of the pledge.

Of course I want a winner but I really give in order to give a kid a chance to goto college.  That is the only return on investment I am looking for for those of frustrated by how much you have given to the program.

Finally if you think any decision is made in the athletic department without an economic consideration you are misguided.

Just randomly courting out of state athletes is probably not a great idea from a cost perspective or a logistics perspective. We have gone after OL in the Midwest but many on our staff were on staff in that area so the relationship comes into play. Same with MBB, Curry has relationships in Ga, so you see him getting guys in that area. For WBB, Coach Jay has relationships out West so you see recruits from that area. If you don't have a relationship, or some connection in that area, is it worth the money AND time to spend spinning your wheels?

I think recruiting relates to sales on many levels.  So the answer is no…you should never spend your time or resources on ANY recruit whether local or national that you do not have a relationship with.

I think our coaches are mostly given the green light to qualify recruits anywhere in the country.  I dont think they are told that due to the cost of out state students to stay clear.  Especially in football.

It goes back to hiring CP and his "recruiting strategy" which was to recruit local kids and build local pipelines due to the talent base we were not tapping before he arrived.

Walty with all due respect you are wrong.  I just read that the scholarship burden is approaching $5million.  OSF is not raising nearly that much.  With certain exceptions, football (the largest provider of scholarships) will recruit Florida due to the cost savings in in-state tuition compared to out of state.  Also this is for good reason, their is more than adequate football talent in the state of Florida.

Been wrong before but again, I would be blown away to hear CP say…"we stopped recruiting or didn't recruit player "x" because of out of state tuition".

What you are sayings is…out of state tuition is I think $10k+ per year more than out of state.  So, that TE we just recruited from Georgia is going to cost us $40,000+ more than a Florida TE over 4 years?  I am just not buying that.

Is the OSF paying for the $3,000 per sememster we are paying our football players now?

To be accurate, below is what we now spend to pay players.  Thanks for reminding me, if OSF $$$ is going to fund this...my donation is cut.

Florida Atlantic* $6,060 $300,000^ Florida

You may have to ask them for that clarification. The Owl Scholarship Fund is for funding student-athlete scholarships, so if that money is considered scholarship money by the NCAA, then my guess is "yes." If that money is not considered scholarship money, then my guess is "no."
