Game Week Thread: FAU @ East Carolina - 09/05/13 @ 7:30 PM

The team that Pelini put out on the field last week should be able to compete with every team in C-USA.

I think Quez and Hankerson will get the play calling in check this week,  and our defense should definitely keep us in the game.

Their QB went for 447 and 5 last week. Hope our DBs are ready and their WRs drop a few like Stacey Coley!

I'm trying not to be negative after just one game, so I hope the offensive coordinator opens the game plan up. I was at the game and watched on TV yesterday and I must say we really have to do more than run the three different QB's. That was the majority of the plays called. In the second half, I don't think they were trying to score a TD. It looked like they were just trying to finish the game with no injuries or turnovers. I think they should've played as if they had nothing to lose and go for some big plays. Let's see if they can try some new things and play a more open/exciting style to get the fans excited about the home opener. I agree with Jab that if we don't just go for it , we will never pull off a huge upset vs. a BCS team!!!!!

The time to go for it is not when you are trying to teach a system to a bunch of young players.  They have to get the basic stuff down first.

This is a process. If you notice, the teams that pulled off the upsets in week 1 were the lower level teams with tons of experience.  NDSU didn't beat KState and Eastern Washington didn't beat Oregon State because of a ton of trick plays…they won because they are really good football teams.  We need to get to the point where we are really good at what we want to do first before opening up the playbook.

You don't need experience to run QB dive and read option plays….thats as basic as any pop warner play! That's all they did in the second half. They even ran on most third downs.

We do not have a qb ready yet.  If the first read was not there it was panic, tuck the ball and run.  It will be a long year for Dukes and company if we can't get a qb with ability to have poise, read the coverage and make good decisions.

Hello Owls! First of all, welcome to C-USA! I saw Stephen Igoe's interview and figured I would sign up and talk about the game with you folks.

On the topic of your QB(s), our pass defense has been horrific for a while now so it is possible you will see a breakout performance by one or both. On top of that we tend to struggle mightily against QBs who like to scramble so if your guys get flustered and take off, that might not be horrible for you.

What does your pass rush look like? We have an experienced line if not an overly talented one. A lot of our plays depend on getting rid of the ball quickly but part of the reason for our record breaking performance against ODU was that our QB had minutes in the pocket when he needed it. I expect your defense will be a step up from ODU (though their offense was pretty impressive). I expect it will be a fairly high scoring event on Thursday.

I noticed that your fanbase is seemingly unhappy with your 2013 intro video (below)…what are your thoughts?

East,

I was pretty impressed with our defense last week, considering the QB/RB combo that UM was playing with.  Between their all stars and sheer size of their O-line they gashed us in the end, but play for play I think we handled them as much as possible.  I'm not sure how our pass rush will look since we got almost no penetration last week, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that your line is not quite as big as Miami's.

I'm predicting a close game with the outcome pretty much dependant on turnovers and/or miscues.  I'll add that ECU is one of the games I would love to go to one day.

When it was first released it wasn't my favorite thing. Being at the game I didn't mind it as much. We play 2 other videos that are more serious or intimidating I guess you could say, so I suppose it's alright to have one corny one. I couldn't tell how much participation was going on because were I sit is really close to the video board. Hard to tell how much of the "response" was the video and how much was the fans.

Here is one of the two more "serious" videos we play before the one in question:
