East,

I was pretty impressed with our defense last week, considering the QB/RB combo that UM was playing with.  Between their all stars and sheer size of their O-line they gashed us in the end, but play for play I think we handled them as much as possible.  I'm not sure how our pass rush will look since we got almost no penetration last week, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that your line is not quite as big as Miami's.

I'm predicting a close game with the outcome pretty much dependant on turnovers and/or miscues.  I'll add that ECU is one of the games I would love to go to one day.

Thanks for the reply duder. I don't know a lot about Miami's offense this year so I can't speak to direct comparisons. Our starters on the offensive line are fairly large at an average of 6'5" 310 but are not as athletic as I would like. I'm not sure how much bigger Miami's line is but I'm willing to bet they are more athletic and better at picking up blitzes. We were alright but not great running the ball last year but looked awful against ODU (22 attempts for 34 yards). If we can't get the run going your defense can pin their ears back and come after the QB. If you can pressure Carden he will make mistakes. If he has time he will pick defenses apart.

If I was your DC I would play the DBs closer to the line and make ECU try to throw over the top. Easier said than done but that's the way to stop this offense IMO.

Well, from what I remember, one thing we didn't do on Friday was put Morris under any kind of serious pressure, and producing sacks hasn't exactly been a staple of our program over the years. I do have faith in our DBs though, as they played well for the most part against the Canes, although UM certainly didn't have everything on show, and we probably didn't either.

Here is one of the two more "serious" videos we play before the one in question:

We do not have a qb ready yet.  If the first read was not there it was panic, tuck the ball and run.  It will be a long year for Dukes and company if we can't get a qb with ability to have poise, read the coverage and make good decisions.

Hello Owls! First of all, welcome to C-USA! I saw Stephen Igoe's interview and figured I would sign up and talk about the game with you folks.

on the topic of your QB(s), our pass defense has been horrific for a while now so it is possible you will see a breakout performance by one or both. on top of that we tend to struggle mightily against QBs who like to scramble so if your guys get flustered and take off, that might not be horrible for you.

What does your pass rush look like? We have an experienced line if not an overly talented one. A lot of our plays depend on getting rid of the ball quickly but part of the reason for our record breaking performance against ODU was that our QB had minutes in the pocket when he needed it. I expect your defense will be a step up from ODU (though their offense was pretty impressive). I expect it will be a fairly high scoring event on Thursday.

Welcome!

I have family and friends in the area and at ECU so I am coming up for the game.  Can't wait, I love the atmosphere at ECU games. Great, friendly crowd but this will be the first time I am not rooting for the Pirates.

As far as the game goes, Miami has a very stout O line so I don't think we really kow what we have in a pass rush, I can tell you last year we had virtually none.  I do believe our defense is quite a bit better all around than Old Dominion's, I watched the ECU OD game and I agree your QB had a great day but you couldn't get a running game going so that might be an issue for you on Thursday.  We ended the Miami game with more 1st downs and more possession time, it was the big plays that continually broke our back, not sure ECU has that same level of talent.

Miami's O-Line is the class of the ACC, we won't face another one like it this year. Ghost is right, we have been terrible at the pass rush since Ramon Rickards left, hopefully with Martin Wright coming back to play a full game this week (keep in mind he only played one down if I remember on Friday and a true freshman played in his DE spot) we'll see some penetration.

This is a completely different animal and our chances rely on a QB getting comfortable and creating some space for us. I think our DBs were fantastic last weekend, we have great speed and a mature defense back there, with LeBlanc back as well, I think we're in for a treat defensively.

Now, for those who are unimpressed with our O, we'll see how much Pelini opens up the playbook this week, it should be a taste of what's to come. Do keep in mind that we're going to be a run first kind of team, so if you're looking for us to air it out, you'll be waiting a while.

The east is purple I have a question for you with ECU being a state with many schools on BCS confrencses and other competetion being close. Along with ECU having only .522 all time winning %.
How is ECU's fan base so strong from the outside you do not seem much diffrent then many other non BCS schools yet get 45k a game and other non BCS schools are happy to get 25k.
What are you guys doing diffren then the rest of us.

Short answer, I don't really know.

Being that I'm a life long Pirate fan I could bore you to death going through the history of ECU football. We have had some big successes, the high water mark being a #9 end of the season ranking in 1991. But is a top 10 finish 22 years ago really why we are approaching 50,000 fans for many games? That doesn't add up to me.

We are just fortunate to have great fans that stick with the program and have had enough successes to keep people around. I'm not going to sit here and tell you how we are better than every other non AQ program because a lot of the things we are proud of have been done before and since at other places. We do have a large student body approaching 30,000 but there are plenty of other non AQ schools that far surpass that number.

I've never really thought about it. My uncle is an alum so I have been an ECU fan as long as I can remember. It's just what you do. If your a student here you go to the games, and once you graduate if you move away, you travel back here on Saturdays and go to the games.

Hopefully you stopped after the first sentence of this response because I don't think I explained it any further after that.

I think playing football for over 80 years, if I am correct, helps with the fan base as well.

Nice piece on Jenson Stoshak via Dieter at The Sentinel…

Stoshak, a kid who came to FAU with no ego and a lot to prove, exceeded expectations last season. And as FAU coaching staff tries to build a program with a less-than-stable foundation and a roster of not-ready-for-primetime players, the more they can get their players to emulate Stoshak, the better.

Former walk-on Jenson Stoshak looks to justify scholarship
