2009 Recruiting Watch List

In terms of the number of quality athletes Florida, Texas, and California are at the top. States like Ohio and Pennsylvania also have great football players, just not the numbers because of lower populations than states like Florida and Ohio.

The comment that Florida is BY FAR the best is ridiculous.

GO OWLS!!!

You would think that, since northern states tend to have populations with heavier individuals, they would produce better players where bulk is a key component (i.e. Offensive Line). Contrast that to Florida where it's hot all the time, so everyone is skinnier because they have to wear less clothing… so we should produce better, faster running positions (WR, RB, etc). The players have told me they love the heat because it kicks them up a notch.

Not sure about your logic, but yes if you are talking about Florida as a speed state and the midwest as producing big cornfed boys then you are following the traditional logic. Recruit the midwest for size. Recruit Florida for speed. Not sure that "everyone is skinnier because they have to wear less clothing" though. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

do we have shot at any of these guys

Yes. It's a little surprising the quality of guys we can get… right now, we have shown that we can recruit right along with UCF and USF.

However, the four and five star kids who get early offers from FSU and UF (as well as the other big name schools that regularly pack 100k people into stadiums) are the ones we don't really have a shot at right now unless they want to stay close to home… but in that case they often play for UMiami.

If we continue to win conference titles, bowl games and get our stadium on-campus, we'll be getting more looks from cranked players.
exactly but i think FAU has a huge advantage over most midmorn school that being Florida is simply the best high school football state in the country BY FAR  Texas is vastly overrated. That being the talent that doesn't go to the big three will be left over for us and thats allot better then in most states. For example Rutgers was a nothing school football wise they begin to recruit in south FLA they become a top 25 program. i strongly believe most of the two three star requites if they played in other states they would be considered four , five star guys. for example my JR. year in high school(which was last year) we had a pretty good WR he wasn't top in county or anything like that but was really good for our team.well he had to transfer to school in NY he is one of the states leaders in rushing which just proves what Ive always said.

Texas high school football is overrated?  Really?  Please explain.
OK lets just compare the big three first UM ,FSU and ,UF VS. your big three Texas, Texas A&M ,and Texas Tech but first we can all agree that these schools get 90percent of there players from there home state. well our big three have won 5 national champions in the last 15 years and appeared in 8 Texas schools haven't even come close Texas is the only real top top program in the state A&M and tech are for the most part around the top 25 but not at that top tier quality. Now lets move no the Mid-Majors not before forgetting USF who was number two in the nation this year who might soon join the ranks of the big three in FLA. Texas has TCU, North Texas, SMU UTEP vs. FAU, FIU, UCF. Though the Texas schools have more history our school are rising way faster then they ever did and ours will most likely join big name conferences in the futrue and the same can not be said about the Texas Mid-Majors.

The whole point of the this is Florida has way more talent to support Major programs while Texas has hit the roof.

Lots of top tier Texas talent goes to Oklahoma and Nebraska. Think they have competed for and or won some national championships?? You can't judge state talent by only looking at in-state universities. If you want to compare Texas to Florida all you need to do is look at how many guys from each state sign D-1 letters of intent each year regardless of where they are going (in or out of state).

The midwest is the place to find big linemen. I'm not sure if you were hinting at fat (midwest) vs skinny (Florida). People are just bigger up here. 6-4, 6-5, 6-6. Not too uncommon for even white people up here. I work in an office with about 500 people.  Not too uncommon to see 6' women in the office. Most people that live in this part of Illinois are German and Scandanavian decent. One of the vice presidents in this company has to duck his head just a bit to walk through the door. There is one lady accross the floor from me that played volleyball for WKU. I'd say she is a good 6-2 or 6-3, white girl.

For all those thinking that we did so horribly in recruiting (due to the lack of stars I guess) you have to check out this page:

floridafb.com

According to this the national ranks for the incoming recruitment classes of Florida football teams are:

UM - Top 3
UF - Top 5
FSU - Top 10
USF - 25-35
FIU - 35-40
UCF - 35-45
FAU - 40-50

If you really think that 40-50 out of 120 is that bad, or that 40-50 is that much worse than 35-45 (when UCF got eleven 3* players compared to our two 3* players) then you are crazy.

We can compete with USF, we saw that last year, we will get the most out of every recruiting class.  AND our classes will get better in terms of stars, but they will always (or should always) be what we need, the kind of people that want to play for us.

And yeh, Florida high school ball is the reason we can be what we are.  Under the same circumstances, New Hampshire Atlantic University just wouldn't cut it.

Go OWLS!

On a sad note, I just got a grant to study in the Netherlands for the Fall so I will not be at any games….It is seriously the hardest decision, and if we make it to a bowl I might have to bite the bullet and buy a ticket there and back for the week.  So keep me posted here and I will do my damnedest to find a sports bar that will carry the games for next year!  "Turn that soccer $#*t off, its the OWLS!"

Let me say a few words about that site, as several thoughts came instantly to mind.  First off, their rankings are way off.  FIU had a Top 35 class? That alone should tell you that this ranking is bunk.  And even while UCF signed a tremendous 11 *** star players, we didn't have a Top 40 class.  We were in the 50-55 range which is what Rivals listed us at as well as USF.  This article also screams "lazy" since they declared USF, UCF, FAU, FIU all had their "best classes ever" despite backing that up whatsoever.  I doubt this author even knows that in 2002 UCF signed 8 *** star players and 3 **** star players.

Finally- it appears as though this guy listened to a select few high school coaches and perpetuated the idea that UCF ignores and dislikes certain local high schools.  I've had to listen to this garbage from childish coaches around here for years now, and it's ridiculous.  The problem is that local Orlando football is mediocre at best, yet these coaches think UCF is obligated to swoop in and take their "star" players, so the coach can claim he sends his players to D1 colleges.  The problem is- in the entire Orlando area there will be a small handful of high D1 caliber athletes available.  And many times the high recruits go to UF or FSU.

Obviously UCF can't compete with UF for every recruit, but as shown in our last class O'Leary knows how to flat out recruit.  What these local high school coaches can't grasp is the fact that O'Leary doesn't want marginal local athletes when he can go to S. Florida, Texas, Georgia, or even NY and take highly regarded recruits with much more athletic ability.  For example, UCF signed 2 of the Top 5 rated prospects in New York and the Player of the Year in Latavius Murray.  It's also not that UCF doesn't TRY to get local talent, it's that UCF only offers the best talent suitable for high level D1 football.

Sorry for this rant, but I've seen this stupid criticism too many times now and it irked me.  High school coaches have a sense of entitlement that I've never quite seen before….
