2020 Head Coach Candidates to Replace Kiffin

Post

Need someone who runs the same offense, don’t want to start over…and would like to retain the defensive coordinator, they did so well today. What a performance.

Hence let spencer become head coach and Weis run the offense.

I would not be opposed to that, as well as other options.

Whoever comes in needs to be someone who can pick up right where this team left off. It cannot be a down year of restructuring etc. Next year's schedule sets up for a BIG year. The momentum needs to keep going.

That person might be able to start like that next year but who knows what kind of recruitment we are going to have in a couple of months. This might be a down year in recruiting. A lot of those high school seniors were sold on Kiffin. Most likely none of the assist coaches will be retained including Kevin Smith. Kiffin might even take a few with him but new coaches usually clear the house. All the coaches that promised their recruits that Kiffin is not leaving will be gone.

que sera sera. This will be a fact of life for FAU for a while. Its something we have to get used to. All the other G5 have.

I agree. That is the problem with looking for up-and-coming coaches who are always looking for the next big job. We fall into a rotation of coaches and a lack of overall consistency. Tough spot to be in. That is why I would prefer an established older coach who is looking to settle down and stay for a while.

My guess is it will be Shannon. Great recruiter in South Florida and has connections to the White family. Would be similar to the Dusty May hire for bball.

There are plenty of other good options but I hope it’s not someone like Eddie Gran or Jedd Fisch. For as long as I can remember, every time the FAU and FIU HC positions open up Gran seems to get mentioned as a candidate. Why hire him now after the program is in a much better position. He is pretty much the opposite of a Kiffin type hire.  In my opinion, FAU should get someone with more experience and more proven like they did with Kiffin. I think someone like Taggart, Leavitt, or Butch Jones would all be good choices. All three have previously done really well at the G5 level. In Taggart’s case he wasn’t given enough time to prove himself at FSU.

All aging retreads. We need young, fresh and innovative.

That’s my fear. With a young, unproven assistant coach we are far more likely to get the next Partridge or Pelini. Retreads like Kiffin and Butch Davis at FIU have had some of the most successfull seasons at their two schools. Our best chance is to get a big name retread that was fired too early by a program with unrealistic expectations.

Kiffin probably wants the opportunity for a national championship and it won't happen with a CUSA team.
Thats one of the down sides to a G5 program. Another is empty stadiums. Its not just the money.
Attendance today for a conference championship according to ESPN 14,300.

At this stage of the recruiting cycle, and with many of the players who ***can*** be back on this team, I think keeping some coaches and continuity is very important to keep this team and class together.  I have no doubt some guys are going to not come because Kiffin will be gone, and a “named” head coach will probably want to bring in mostly a new staff (plus I could see Lane taking a few). So the idea of keeping as many of the group that includes Spencer, Weiss, Smith, and Trickett together feels like a very important thing to do.

The schedule and the talent we all hope to have for 2020 sets up for another solid season (even without Lane).  A mass exodus of coaches followed by a mass exodus of players and recruits is what should be guarded against with the coaching moves.

I know nothing is official yet, but it seems like a matter of time before Lane to Ole Miss is official, so might as well start this thread.

Without doing much research, these are the names that came immediately to mind…I'm sure there will be many others.

Willie Taggart - I know FSU was a mess, but I still think he's a good coach and this could be a better fit for him.

Jim Leavitt - Had success at USF, looking for another chance.

Randy Shannon - UCF connection with White's brother.

Chad Morris - Was at Clemson when President Kelly was there.

Barry Odom - Was at Mizzou when White was there.

James Coley - long time OC, local guy, known as a great recruiter.

Do you only show up when we lose a coach now?
