2nd year Head Coaches

Post

But IT IS TIME for the Coaches to produce and deliver a quality team this year and not blow/lose so many close games like last year. I can't help but wonder where this team ends up if we do not blow/GIVE AWAY that Wyoming game!

But the past is the past and we all hope the Coaches and players (Coaches especially) learned A LOT last season and can turn this team around to 7 or even 8 wins this year! Go Owls!

We had the 103rd ranked offense and the AVG D we played of 112th.

Again BTW this all the good stuff inwould bring to the pod cast.

Just to point out how irrelevant and skewed the numbers in your post are….(I'll dig into your whole 2nd year coaches post next).

FAU vs Alabama 41-0.  Bama 620 total yards, FAU 145 total yards.
FAU vs Nebraska 55-7  Nebraska 784 total yards, FAU 200 total yards.

Been awhile since I took statistics, but those look like outliers to me.  I could rework the numbers and show that our offensive and defensive rankings would have been DRASTICALLY different without the 2 cash games, but I think we all get the point.

And yes, I would love to hammer your thoughts in a podcast.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I don't understand why those games shouldn't count?
Your trying to defend the 103rd ranked offense and 113th ranked defense.
There are no outliers in college football.
If you don't want hose games to count then we should drop to FCS.
I am feeling a OC40 vs Walty on the podcast
Ratings galore.

Ok there has been some talk on the nest debating how long it takes to get a real idea of what kind of head coach you have.
Some want to give a head coach for ever before you shrug your shoulders and say "maybe he isn't  the one".
I on the other hand I realize you don't need to give a coach that long to decide whether you is worth it or long.

So I did some research to see what all the 2nd year head coaches did in 2014.
The numbers to were a bit shocking to me on how much 2nd year coaches improved from there 1st year.

Out of 25
16 Improved there team by 2 games or more accounting for 52 more wins from the year before.
only 4 coaches got worse from year 1 to 2 and two of those coaches took over from programs that were successful before they arrived and the coach before went onto larger program for example San Jose Head coach Ron Gragher.
There were 4 2nd year coaches in C-USA last year.
Ron Tuner had a 3 game improvement.
Skip Holtz had a 5 game improvement.
Todd Monken  won 2more games.
Sean Kugler had 5 more wins from year one.
Other notable coaches with 2nd year success.
Some other Notable improvements.

Bret Bielema (Who Charlie coached under)won 4 more games in the SEC west.

PJ Fleck went from 1-11 in year one to 8-5 ( Has a lot of South Florida recruiting ties.)

Mark Rhule went from 2-10 to 6-6( If he can do it with Temple Owls we should be good in Boca)

Scott Satterfield went 4-8 his first year with then FCS App St then won 7 with FBS App St in his 2nd year.

Many of these coaches did not have the luxury of taking over a bowl eligible team in the best area for recruiting in the country or was able to keep an interim head coach who won 4 games the year before.

In my eyes this 2nd year will show what impact he has made on the program.
He has now had 20 months to make his changes and lets see what he has.

Some say he "needs 3-4 years to get all his guys"
Many coaches prove that he can do it with his guys and get more out of the players that were there before him. (This is what Charlie needs to prove)

I OC40 has faith we will see a strong OWL football team this year (7-8 WINS) anything less some changes will need to be made going into year three.

(I do not need to tell you this I am sure you know) I will stop accepting meritocracy this season!!

GO OWLS!!

Some context would go along way to making this post worth the time everyone has invested already, such as year one schedule to year two.  Was the competition reasonably the same, stronger, or weaker?  What momentum did they carry over from year one to year two?  How much of the previous staff was retained?  How was their recruiting relative to prior years at that school and against their peers?

Also, you're stating 7-8 wins is a success, will you standby that statement this season and not go off the reservation when things inevitably get a bit tough from time-to-time?

OC40 check this out. It's more than possible for Charlie to improve the win totals. Mark, this article paragraph relates to the 4 time in a row New Orleans bowl champs ULL that we were talking about in your store.  It's from 2014. They have gone 9-4 for four years now.

The Ragin' Cajuns were coming off of a 3-9 season and had never been to a bowl game when Hudspeth, a former successful Division II head coach, was hired away from the Mississippi State coaching staff in late 2010. His teams have gone an identical 9-4 and won a New Orleans Bowl championship in all three seasons of his Ragin' Cajuns tenure.

There is no doubt it can be done. I certainly hope we do it.

I am just managing my own preseason expectations. It won't impact how excited I am for the season. This is the most excited I have ever been for a football season to start. I just now try not to let the hype impact my expectations. I have fallen into that trap many times and it ruins my season most of the time. We have not had many winning seasons so over time, I have adjusted.

I want to see what the team looks like against Tulsa. I can't just read articles and then make assumptions about how good we are. I am not that good at evaluating football talent.

Me either. Also , we don't know much about our competition. I have learned in business that you hire the best person you can find for a job. Tell them your expectation. Then trust that they follow through.Charlie seems like the right guy for the job. Like FAUOWL, I too have high expectations, but know from history, to take the wait and see attitude. Way less disappointment. Or, way more happiness. Either way, I will be back next season.
