I meant the department's financial problems…Those issues would certainly be helped by more alumni support.
Well, I think we should clarify what exactly would be spent upon to elevate wins.
Because that is all that really matters here…….
That's what brings people back, that's what gets people involved, and that's what grows the program for the most part.
Is it? We've had winning teams before and we weren't exactly packing the stadium (I realize it was Lockhart, but still) and the success didn't last.
Have you been to the last couple of games at home?
Anyway, thought you were talking about results on the field…so thanks for clarifying!
Yes, I've been at both home games. And no problem, I had a feeling we were talking about two different things.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that what happens on the field matters….just not as much as people like to say it does. Same with how likeable the coach is. I just think that if you are blaming lack of winning or Pelini's personality as the reason for poor attendnace, you haven't been paying attention the last decade. It's ALWAYS been a problem.
Winning, especially at the mid-major level is largely cyclical. Winning can get you noticed, but it doesn't necessarily make people care. Just look south. FIU had some good wins last year and people took notice. They were talked about some more locally and nationally, but are there any more loyal FIU fans then there were before? Not really. If anything, their attendance has been worse this year then it was before. Oh, and they have a coach that is a media darling down here. Penn State is obviously an extreme example (and yes, I am aware that it's a ridiculous comparison, but I promise I'm going someplace with this!), but that program went through the worst possible thing that could happen to a program and they still sell out their enourmous stadium. Why? Because people that go to that school love that school and one of the ways that they show that is they fill that stadium, no matter what. They don't just love winning…they LOVE Penn State. We don't have enough people who love FAU right now…and THAT is our real problem…not whether the coach is lovable or not. Coaches come and go…teams have good seasons and bad seasons. If you are a FAU student or alumni, neither should be the determining factor of whether you support the team or not. If you care about FAU (and obviously if you can afford it) and you want to see the team improve, you will go. A great home field advantage will sell better players on coming here and an empty stadium will drive them away.
I have top really disagree FIU is a completely diffrent school form FAU they are way more of a local Miami and draw way more of the Miami CC crowd. FAU draws to way more of the Tampa, Orlando Jacksonville so those students tend to fell more pride then just going to the school down the street.
To say FAU did not have support when we were winning is wrong who remembers the Tuesday night game vs TROY in 2008 we had 17k at that game and were 1-4 going into the game. Later that year when we played FIU at Sun-Life in the most exciting FAU game ever played we had about 15k fans compared to FIU's 3-k and the next year at FIU who remembers there almost being more FAU fan then FIU fans in their own stadium.
I am now a senior and the change of knowledge and caring about the football program from then to now has greatly improved but does not show because of the losing. This school is craving for a winner and will blow up like no their when we get one.
You just have to look at basketball those games against FIU and games we played on ESPN that atmosphere is nothing that FIU has had at their school. FAU students have shown they want to support this team and school.

Thank you for your insight owlmom. It's hard for us as fans to watch the games, and I can't imagine how hard it is on the players and their families. We may gripe and moan at times, but we are all fans no matter what. Every week I fly my FAU flag from the front of my house so everyone in the neighborhood knows I'm an owl, hell, even my poor dog has to wear his FAU bandana on saturdays. Point being we do support the players and the team, we just need a place like this to vent.
As for players, I'm looking forward to seeing Burton next year, and I'd like to see what Dukes does, but I haven't had a chance to yet. I would really like to see M. Jackson get more plays, I think he is lightning fast. Can someone tell me why he does not get the plays? I know he had some control issues vs. Wagner, but we should still use him more.
I'm assuming that Martese has been in the dog house because of fumbling issues in the opener. However that was a month and a half ago.

It just sucks that I'll graduate from the institution in may and have only seen the team win 2 games. I will prob never go to an FAU football game again..
I know you are frustrated as we all are but really think about this comment. There will be good years and bad years, if you really mean this you were not much of an FAU fan in the first place.
There are much better days ahead for FAU and FAU Football.
I'll be at next weeks tailgate.. Prob won't go into the stadium though. The only game I can really see myself going to would be Shula Bowl. But even then, we'll prob be down by 20 at half time which means the after-pool party will be starting a little early that week 8)
Ugh. This guy is the worst. >:(
hahaha you're so funny dude 8) 8) 8) 8) c'mon guys let's be real, I am a student here and yea the school is alright but there's really no point in getting emotionally invested in this team. You're gonna end up with a heart attack for christ sake!!

Hey, believe me, I'm not having a heart attack over this. If you want to be a bad fan, that's your choice. It's a free country. I'm just sick of the "it's only FAU, it's no big deal" attitude that has existed since I was in school there a decade ago. I hope that over time, there are less and less students like you.
You CHOSE to go to school here, you may as well support it. You don't care enough about the school to attend 5 or 6 games a year? If that's the case, you prove my point: What this team lacks most isn't wins…it's students and alumni that care enough to take ownership of the program. If they don't care, nobody else will.

Ok guys/ladies…..let's be fair. I know you are disappointed in the season so far and with good reason. However, understand that this is the coaching staffs first year! There was a certain air of excitement when Pelini and staff were hired and came to the campus. Guess what? We have to keep that same attitude for the players. I believe that it normally takes a coach 2-3 years to put his stamp on a program. There are those rare occasions where it may take less, but those occasions are very rare. So, my question to all the bashers, "Are you really being fair, or were you looking for instant gratification?" As to the "closed" practices, does it really make that much of a difference if the practice is closed or open? There may be a very good reason why he has the practices closed. I have met Coach Pelini as well as much of the staff and find them to be very approachable. Don't let what others think cloud your mind and be positive if for nothing else, the kids that play for the university. They deserve your support and loyalty! SALUTE THE HOOT! RIDE OR DIE FOR THE BLUE AND RED!
P.S. I respect everyone's opinion, but my son will be on the field next year and I would like to think that he and his teammates have the unyielding support of the FAU community!

I too was expecting a lot more from this team by this point - but this should have been viewed from the get-go as a transition year by everyone.
To put things in perspective, the great Mike Leach, the guy everyone wanted to coach here, will probably finish the 2012 season with only 2-3 wins at Wash St. The Gator Nation wanted to get rid of Muschamp last year as they finished the regular season at 6-6. Now look at them.
Takes time to install a new system on both sides of the ball.

JUCO's fill holes, they don't stock teams which is precisely what CP did. This will take longer to fix than most realize, my guess is in three years time we will be a .500 team. Why? Most JUCO's have two years to play and depth needs to be created behind them, something that will take another year or two. The question we all should be asking is, "Is CP the man to do it?"
Pelini may be approachable to a players family, but he is awkward in social situations around alums. I've been to several events where he was present and I have yet to feel that he is approachable or interested in talking. Howard, Pat Chun, Dexter, MJ, Jarvis all are approachable and interested in talking to alums.
Pelini is working for someone that didn't hire him, I'd be concerned if I were him with his performance. What loyalty does Chun have to him?
Progress? In my opinion, we are worse than last year considering we still haven't beaten a FBS team. We had to squeak one by a FCS team. This team has been a loser for years now, the players seem to accept it. Besides coaching, how else do you explain last weekends collapse? These kids are not accustomed to winning!
