Anyone else annoyed by Pete Gracia's comments?

The said

He was in the booth and one of the commentators asked him how important is getting the Don Shula trophy back?

His response was to the extent of "Well obviously it's important but we have bigger goals on our minds. "  He then proceeded to name all the body bag series's FIU has in the next few seasons and how Cristobal has to struggle now to succeed later… ::)  I don't think it was an intentional swipe at FAU, but it was just funny to listen to him minimizing the fact that FIU is getting worked by FAU year after year.

This to me shows Garcia does not think before he speaks or maybe he has no brains at all. What a thing to say about an annual game both schools agreed to have with a trophy going to the winning team. I wouldn't be surprised if Howard is fuming about that comment. Did anyone hear Bowden say that when FSU lost to UF? That was an idiotic thing to say to the media. FIU lost the game to a 5-7 team but they have bigger goals in mind. I think one of their goals should be to win more than 3 games in a season and focus on beating FAU when the Shula bowl game comes up.

The whole thing seems to stink. FAU is the only one taking this annual game seriously. I say develop an annual rivalry game with Troy or maybe UCF. Every year when FAU wins we hear the same thing, from FIU " we really don't consider this game any more important than any other SBC game". Obviously that is the reason FAU wins every year except in 2005 when our freshmen team lost to their senior laden team

I heard Jared Smith in a video telling the other players he always respects his opponent but Memphis wasn't showing any respect and look what happened. Garcia will go no where if he continues to belittle opponents like FAU. You reap what you sow.

Pooh Bear Mars I believe is Red Shirting so he wasn't playing yesterday.

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

I'm not annoyed by Garcia's comments, but I am amused. I always would prefer to be underestimated than overestimated, and I hope he continues to do this while the Owls continue to beat his team.

As a loyal FIU fan and student, I have to agree with you on this one. As much as I would like to see FIU move on to a bigger conference, we're yet to establish ourselves in the worst conference in college football. Once we start dominating the Belt and winning bowl games, if ever, then we could start talking conference moves. And no, I'm not saying next year is going to be the year where we establish Sun Belt supremacy. I know it's going to take time and we're far from where we want to be. I have respect for what FAU has accomplished so far and would go out on a limb and say you guys have the edge on us, FOR NOW! As far as the Shula Bowl is concerned, I'm all for it. Being the only public universities in South Florida, I embrace this rivalry to the max. This rivalry, and both of our programs, have potential to grow into something huge. Our teams have given us tough, grind it out type performances two years running and I hope they do so for years to come. I just wish more students, on FIU's part, would take more pride in our school and help make this rivalry blossom. I don't know the extent of FAU's fanbase, but you guys did have a nice little turn out last night. Was the majority students or alumni? But anyways, congrats on the win and until next year, Go Panthers!

+1…very good post.  I also agree with what both, Bytor and owlcountry had to say for the most part.  Every one of the SBC schools (at least the most ambitious) have mentioned the fact of moving to "better" conferences at one time or another….I still remember Howard saying Big East and national championships as part of his usual vocabulary, at leats early on in his tenure.  So, really, nothing that much different than what some leaders of our schools say…at least privately…about where they want to lead our respective universities…

While it's obviously good and big to win the Shula Bowl every year, I'm sure that is not the goal of Howard S. for his program, and he had and has "bigger goals on his mind" (bowl games, move to the Big East conference, winning a national championship, etc).  I think Garcia is far from being a "politcally correct" speaker with his comments,  but saying the opposite would be a bit hypocrite, and not truthful of your ultimate goals.

Re: Anyone else annoyed by Pete Gracia's comments?

I agree that both programs should have bigger & larger goals, but at the same time, you must be realistic and be in the present moment.  I think one of the idea behind the Shula Bowl was to create fan & community interest, to help build the fan base of  both programs while establishing a rivalry between two institutions in similar positions…what would college football be without rivalries.

I think it's healthy for a program to have rivalries that co-exist inside and outside one's conference.

And in the same instance we should be finding ways to help make this a better conference regardless of future endeavors or goals, if you wait for that opportune time…it may never come.  Opportunities like what happen with USF moving to the Big East do not happen very often.
