Anyone notice the Sentinel

Amen!

And please do not rehash his negative crap by posting it on this board. When I read it by accident only because it was posted here, I wanted to puke. Marcus is suppose to be reporter for the Owls - sounds as always, that he would rather be covering a dog show. If you don't read him perhaps they will find another sports writer who is happy to be covering the Owls !!!  He has a sad life and too bad his paper does not realize that they need readers to support their paper.

Overall, his writing is rather negative and ocassioanlly snide in tone - gee what a shocker, because so is the Post!

Can you give some examples of Marcus being negative (and for the love of Jebus, please don't bring up the band crap) or making snide remarks about the team? I think he's pretty even-keeled in his reporting.

Here's a prime example from yesterday's paper after our WIN over ASU:

"I’m not so sure a team that has needed heroics to beat Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and North Texas should be counting on parading down Bourbon Street for the New Orleans Bowl, but Schnellenberger always has shot for the moon."

Fact of the matter is we are 4-1 in the SBC…all we need to do is win 2 more games, and regardless of the reference hemade above we are in…what "heroics" were needed to bet NT or ASU?  we simply hunkered down and won the game, no??

once again, he has to take the "negative" spin route…….

Look, he's right.

I'm as big a fan as anyone else here, I've been to all the home games, stayed through the rain, went to radio shows, I'm going to Gainesville and braving the ire of 75k+ Gator fans, so on and so forth…

but…

to discredit what Nelson's saying is an injustice to the reality of the situation.

Like fans from any SBC message board, we're looking at it through optimistic rose-colored glasses and saying, man, we're good, look, we beat Minnesota, we're definitely on our way up to the Big East and everything and we're right on the edge of greatness.

Meanwhile, off in the distance, Troy fans and MTSU fans are saying that same thing. Even the FIU fans think it's only going to be a couple of years before the Big East "comes knocking on our door" and they push away from the Sun Belt, which members of FAU Athletics say "we're fortunate to be in" (and we are, in a way) even though it's one of the least regarded conferences with teams that often don't get media exposure and none of which are ranked at a respectable place (Troy is the closest). But that's a different issue.

Back to what MN said. We, the fans, and Ted Hutton, we all pretty much said we're going to wrap up teams like North Texas after what we did to MTSU, thinking, okay, NT/ULL/ASU/ULM all have struggled mightily and then the games were soooo close. We were fighting our way out of being behind in points against teams that most people think are awful.

And it's because our game is so uneven. We have an "A" game but it doesn't often come out in SBC fights – why aren't these heroics there from the beginning? It's just strange to think that we played USF so close, which validated us at that time (even though USF is not ranked in the Top 25 anymore, from what I understand) but then we lose to ULM. You know? If we're really as good as we all believe we are, we should be walking over these teams, don't you think? Don't you think, if FAU was on the edge of being called upon to the Big East or some comparable conference, we'd have better win margins than less than two touchdowns (in cases like this weekend – 3 measly points?).

That's just what I was thinking about while I was slouched against the Lockhart bleachers when we were down by 11 points against ASU, going into the 4th quarter and knowing this would result in another 4th quarter comeback (which it did) or an OT showdown (which thankfully it did not). I thought, "We're a good team. If we were a great team, we wouldn't be behind." I came into that game knowing it would be close, although back when we were playing North Texas and even ULM I thought we'd win 35-14 or something. Coach said it best: "We haven't really dominated anyone this year."

We're a good team and we have some great playmakers. We're blessed to have people like Smith, Harmon, Bartels, Rose, etc and I expect great things by the time (2009) that Rusty is a senior. Because I am optimistic… but at the same time I know that, when I walk into Miami to watch us play FIU, I can't think that FIU is the worst team in college football and FAU will fold them up with no problem because it's probably going to be a 4th quarter win too (the "heroics"). And I wish it wasn't that way. We shouldn't need heroics to defeat these teams. We shouldn't have to hunker down. It should be over by halftime if we were great.

Until then, we have to hang on every single minute and see how it plays out.

Owlcounty…I don't think anyone here is disputing that we have been struggling against teams we thought we should blow out and maybe we aren't as good as we hoped and thought we would be but I think you are missing the point here.  The point is we won, we beat ASU and the only thing stopping us from NO is FIU (who I think we can and will beat) and Troy which is the big challenge…is that "SHOOTING FOR THE MOON"?  That's his negative spin as usual with a little side shot at the attendance numbers.

GO OWLS!

I read what Nelson wrote in the Post and perhaps it's a negative take on things, but who cares?  We have struggled to put Sun Belt teams away.  That's a fact.  We all would like to be blowing out ULL, NT, ULM, etc. and not have to make every game so dramatic, but it is part of the learning process.  People forget that the majority of this team is still very young.  Rusty is only a sophomore.  The receivers are mostly sophomores.  Much of the D-line is playing it's first games of NCAA football this season.  You can go on and on, but the good news is they already have learned how to win close games.  That is huge.  Look at FIU.  They are very young too…even younger than us, but they haven't figured out how even compete consistently yet.  The next step in our progression is learning how to put teams away.  We have let teams hang around all season.  We have been up early and not made that one extra play on offense that would put teams down by 2 TD's in the 1st quarter and take them out of their game plan.  Also, mostly because of the D-line problems, we have struggled stopping the run.  That leaves an opening for teams to stay that have less pure talent to stay in games.  I think next year, with another full offseason of growth, we'll be blowing out some of these teams.  But hey, even with all that, we are still two wins from the Title.  If we win the conference by having to comeback on teams, nobody will care.

Why wouldn't he take a shot at the "announced" attendance? Were you there? We were joking during the game that FAU would announce the attendance at like 15K, which even that would have been a joke. Instead they say 18K-plus? Come on, that's so ridiculous.

I completely agree with owlcountry and fauowls44. Nelson might not come off as positive as the FANS want to read, but that's because it's an unbiased truth of the situation.

And as far as "shooting for the moon," weren't we a pre-season pick to be like 6th in the conference? I think we already have exceeded expectations. But because of our Sun Belt game comebacks, we haven't been playing like a championship-caliber team. (Please don't give me the "good teams find a way to win", "we show a lot of heart", "comebacks make a team stronger" jargon.) Good teams don't need to come back against teams like North Texas, ULM, ULL, ASU. Troy on the other hand has been.

Why can't we all just see things for what they are? We are definitely on the way up, but we aren't the class of the league just yet.
