Yup, and our "new" guy is already in the botom half of salary! Did not take other schools long to adapt and respond yet we STILL don't even have coordinators on board let alone a coaching staff? >:(

Geez, GAOwl…are you ever happy??  Who cares about ASU and what they are doing.  If they want to blow their budget on a guy who has just as much head coaching experience as our new coach, good for them.  If we win, Coach Pelini will get his due.  I will say this about Malzhan…his offense went from National Champions to 104th in the country.  In Coach Pelini's "down" year this year, his D went from 11th to 36th.
WHO cares what ASU are doing????? they are in our conference and college football is an arms race.

The point was we just hired a coach.  What do you want to do?  Replace him or give him a raise?  You can't worry about who ASU hires right now…just worry about what we are doing.  People are making a big deal about them hiring a guy that is about as qualified as our new coach.  So they paid him twice as much…that's their problem, not ours.

And we are doing pretty well in the arms race with the new stadium and new coach.  Only thing left to do is win some games….

Exactly, Let's win some games, then worry about Carl's salary.  If he goes better than 7 wins next year, we'll pass the hat around and all throw in some money, how about that.

It is the best hire they could have made to make a splash.  However, the way thier offense dropped off after Newton left doesn't make him look very good.

I think any offense would drop off after you lose a Heisman Winner that was the #1 pick in the NFL Draft and has a strong shot at being rookie of the year.

I don't think this is a "splash" hire. He coached high school football for over 10 years in the state of Arkansas and spent a year as the offensive coordinator at Arkansas under Houston Nutt. That spells out recruiting ties to the state. He was the perfect fit for an Arkansas State program that was looking for a new head coach.

He wants to prove that he can be a head coach in college football and he has a better chance of doing that at Arkansas State than at Vanderbilt.

First, dropping from one of the top offenses in the country to #104 or whatever they were is not acceptable at a program like Auburn no matter who you lose.  You should have the talent to reload and at the minimum stay in the top 50.  But then again this goes back to my argument that you hate to admit…QB position means an awful lot…no matter who the coach is.

Not a "splash" hire?  He will be the best known name in the SunBelt.  I would consider that a splash.

I am not sure recruiting ties to the state of Arkansas is something to brag about or make a living off.  I bet 50% of Arkansas current roster is from Texas.

1. When have I ever said that the QB position doesn't mean an awful lot? I think Wilbert and any other QB on our roster is awful and that is why we finished 1-11. You said John Brantley was bad at UF this year and I agreed.

Not only did Auburn loss Newton, they lost 3 of there top 4 receivers and 4 starting offensive lineman. Sorry, but regardless of the "reloading talent you should have" when you loss that much from a unit and then play the #1, #2, #3, #4, and #9 defenses with half of those games being on the road, there is going to be some difficulties.

2. My point was, you were making it seem as if Arkansas State only hired him for the name. Regardless of his name, he would be a good hire and fit for a Sun Belt program located in Arkansas. He has been a high school head coach in the state for years, winning a state title and was also a coordinator at the state's flagship university.

3. Have no idea how this point is relevant to Malzahan having recruiting ties to Arkansas, but I checked the figures for you. Arkansas has 23 players (18%) out of the 125 listed on there roster from the state of Texas. I think having ties to the state would be something to brag about when you're the #2 school in the state behind an SEC program, and have a limited recruiting travel budget.

Thier offene should never drop into the 100's at Aubrun I dont care who they lose, period. 23 players from another state is a ton.  My point is that Arkansas isn't exactly a hotbed of talent.  I just said he is a splash hire, which he is.  He is a big name.  Is there really a debate to that?

My point about the QB's is that it wasn't all about our coaching staff being bad and having a bunch of talentless players…it was really about our QB's underachieving and not having the talent.  Which whether at Auburn, UF or FAU will make you look bad as a coach.  If you understand that concept I am sorry for thinking you didn't.  I will say it a million times if I have to…with Rusty Smith this years team goes 7-5.

I pictured Malzahn coaching in a higher profile conference than the Sunbelt.  If anything it does raise the stature of the conference   Who knows, we've all been pushing to go to Conference USA, maybe the belt surpasses that conference in a few years especially with many of their core teams wanting to bolt.  No place else has the speedy players like the Southeast.

He would be at Kansas or UNC if his wife would've kept her mouth shut.  Her interview cost him millions and a shot at starting his HC career at a BCS school.

I agree with ya Walty and I guess that is where so much frustration built this year. EVERYONE saw the problm but the staff, who were not even will to give another qb a legitamate shot.

While you're right about Arkansas and where players come from, with his ARK connections, he should be able to tap into some of the Walton money to bring better players to Ark State.

Re: Arkansas State's new coach.

I read somewhere today Malzahan was getting 1.3 million at Auburn. If true, that's one helluva pay cut to be a head coach at a Sunbelt team.

Well I do agree that HS needed to step down due to his miss (bad miss) on the QB.  I just dont agree that he doesn't know how to coach which some people on this board think.  I dont think the game passed him by, I just dont think the QB's he recruited were DI football players and I feel bad because he shouldn't have had to end his storied career like that.  I really hate that the fans in thier young 20's think the way they do about such a great coach because of the last season.

Anyway, onto Pellini!
