That's a headscratcher for his particular situation, sure, so the move to Arkansas must have been pretty personal.

For other coaches it makes more sense. Let's say you're a BCS coordinator making $800k and a Sun Belt school offers you the head coach job for $500K. Do you take it? Well, Pelini pointed out in a recent interview that because there are only 120 Division 1 schools, and thus only 120 Division 1 head coaches, you want to jump at every opportunity to move up. After all, a lot of big time programs seem to want head coach candidates who have previous experience at that level (regardless of conference). So you take the Sun Belt job and the paycut because you're much more employable down the line if you've been coordinator (BCS) and head coach (SBC) rather than just coordinator (BCS).

Moreover, I think ego and the desire to prove yourself are the bigger influencers in that decision. Those guys don't get into the game because they want to be second fiddle to anyone, so the chance to run your own shop takes over.

You think he was not REAL frustrated by Freeze getting the Miss. job? I know the Ole Miss people are!

Oh well, guess he figured he better get his "seasoning" as a head coach over with. If he does well he is gone next year too!

I agree, but 104th?!  Carl Pelini's D lost a number of players the last 2 years, including the #1 pick of the draft and when his D was "down" this year, it finished 36th in the nation.  How much of a genius are you if your offense finishes 104th?

Especially playing our D once this year….

We got more 1st downs and Auburn only gained 8 yards more than us, AT AUBURN. We lost that one on turnovers (two bad picks in particular). the Auburn D won that game not Mahlzons O!
