Comments: 0 More Print Months of careful evaluation and strategizing culminated in the Big East announcing yesterday it will expand its football membership from eight to 10.
As reported exclusively in Sunday's Post, a regularly scheduled meeting of the league's presidents resulted in a unanimous decision to provide greater stability for the football members through expansion.
The meeting was attended by former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who has been consulting with Big East commissioner John Marinatto.
"The Big East presidents agreed that the interests of each of the conference's 16 member institutions would be served by increasing the number of Bowl Subdivision football-playing members to 10," Marinatto said in a statement released by the league. "They unanimously approved the process to evaluate the terms and conditions for potential expansion candidates."
Villanova, which has been studying the move up from FCS to FBS level football and has a board of trustees meeting scheduled for December, is said to have moved significantly closer to making the jump to big-time college football, a source close to the situation told The Post.
NCAA rules mandate a two-year transitional period for a program moving from FCS to FBS. Reports estimate such a move would cost Villanova an initial outlay of at least $30 million.
If Villanova, which won the 2009 FCS national championship, joins the Big East in football (the Wildcats are one of the basketball conference's marquee programs), Temple will not get an invitation, an important condition requested by Villanova, a source said.
TCU, a member of the Mountain West, or Central Florida, a member of Conference USA, would get the other invite. The earliest the teams could officially join is 2012.
Central Florida, located in Orlando, would increase the league's exposure in the Sunshine State and provide South Florida with a natural rival.
Central Florida would like to be added for all sports and would give the league's non-revenue sports a travel partner with South Florida. But the basketball-only members would prefer not to increase the league membership to 17.
TCU offers the league a toehold in talent-rich Texas. The Horned Frogs, currently ranked No. 4 in the BCS standings, would give the league a quality program, and the Mountain West has no buyout clause.
Several sources told The Post that Memphis and East Carolina, which have long desired membership in the Big East, are not favorably-viewed by a majority of league members

The big east is messed up altogether. The are dominated by the basketball aspect and are only trying to look into football only additions. This conference does not want to mess up their organization in B ball just for football. That being the case, i believe the conference in expanding in the wrong direction.
I agree with this statement. I didn't realize they just want to expand for football until I read an article today. Expanding the conference in football is very difficult because of basketball. They already have 16 teams in b-ball which is plenty, and we know none of those teams would want to leave such a powerhouse conference. Depaul, Georgetown, Marquette etc are making it difficult to expand in the "right" direction. What's the point of only being in a conference for ONE sport? Ya, I'd love the exposure and stuff, but I'd rather a conference take us as a whole and not just football. Like many others, I'd like to get out of the Sunbelt. If UCF goes I think we're a good fit for C-USA if they want to keep a Florida presence. And Jab, why do you think we won't go anywhere without FIU?

In regards to moving to the Big East…ain't gonna happen anytime in the near or semi near future. We are so far from a discussion of moving to a BCS conference it is ridiculous to believe we would be chosen to move up. The reasons are endless but we can start with facilities, fan base and academics (still need to improve).
I love my school but I like to live in reality. I believe there is a small chance we could get chosen for CUSA possibly in this shake up but most likely in the next big conference realignment.
More important right now is to win out and get an outside shot at a bowl.
GO OWLS!
