If this Trojan's post holds any water at all, then you are one step closer to checking off "Join Big East Conference" on your check list of accomplishments at the bottom of your posts!

Owl09

Shouldn't the check box be "Join a BCS Conference" Why limit to just BE?

GPA/SAT scores????? They are a tier 4 school just like us.

Yes, GPA/SAT scores. For instance in 2007, FIU's average GPA/SAT was 3.7/1144.

Take a look at how we fare against other in-state institutions: http://www.clay.k12.fl.us/khh/Guidance%20Folder/Matrix.pdf

Did you know that for 2008, FAU's average GPA was 3.0? That's the lowest it's been in almost a decade. In fact, it's been on a steady decline over the last four years: 3.4 in 2005, 3.3 in 2006, 3.2 in 2007 and now 3.0 in 2008. See for yourself in the "combined GPA" section:

http://iea.fau.edu/factbk/sat08.htm

What's next? 2.8 in 2009?

Not only that, this data I'm looking at (

ERROR: A link was posted here (url) but it appears to be a broken link.

http://iea.fau.edu/factbk/grate08.htm) shows that only 15% of people who entered in 2003 graduated in the usual four years (2007). We know that's because of class availability fluctuating but is that factor considered when conference people look at our numbers? Probably not.

People with low GPAs can still go on to do amazing things but damn, we sure take a knock in credibility when people find out that our average GPA is that low. And FAU's statistics show that the lower the incoming GPA, the higher chance they'll fail out… which means our retention will be low and I think our overall academics will be considered when moving a school to a new conference.

Is that not correct? I'd love to be wrong and find out that we could move to CUSA or BE with numbers like ours.

Interesting info Owlcountry.  In fact, the comparison of in-state schools paints a grim picture of FAU academically.  I finished my undergrad work in '98 and recall seeing the admission requirements during the early part of the 2000's had risen to levels that would have made my admission challenging.  Now, I would have been at the top of these incoming classes, and if you knew my high school academic record, thats laughable.

So to spin this post to stay on-track with the topic, in order to make a case for the Big East, CUSA, or any non-Belt conference, we not only need to focus on the on-campus football stadium, non-high school gymnasium arena, a baseball stadium fit for a D1 contender, and increasing athletics attendance, but we also need to improve the academics as well.  When I applied to schools back in 1994, FAU was my #1, UCF my #2 and FIU a distant #3.  Now, I don't think FAU would have been in the top 3, though the football program would certainly still have my interest.

Go Owls!

Well, both schools are still tier 4 schools, so I don't think FIU is a better school.
I know plenty of friends transferring to FAU or UM from FIU because the were disappointed about their program.
Can I prove it? no, I can't
Why FIU has a higher GPA? I don't know. Is it because hispanics are more dedicated to academics since over a 70% of the student body is hispanic. Please don't say I am a racist for those that like to play the race card because I am hispanic too.
My point is that both schools are pretty similar and it is really hard to say oh! my school is better in general. Each school has its good and bad things and I don;t think that every program at FIU and every professor at FAU are perfect because everybody has a different point of view. In addition, I am really tired of reading the Find Another University statement. Is there something behind this statement that I am not aware of?.
Going back to C-USA or the BigEast, I think few things need to happen at FAU before we are considered by any of these institutions, so for now let's have fun watching our Owls play against CMU and support our program 100%.
GO OWLS!!!!

Re: Big East Expansion

FIU has a higher incoming GPA/SAT for 2 reasons

1) They get more applicants. If the distribution of grades of the applicants follows the usual curve, they have more high GPA's to pick from.

2) FIU is popular with the local population of Miami which includes people of Hispanic descent. The university is 60+% Hispanic. FIU is a first choice university for these students. Not a 2nd or 3rd choice. FIU is probably attracting Dade County's top Hispanic students that like the convenience of the university and feel comfortable with the familiar culture there.

This does not mean FIU is academically better. They get more applicants and end up with a higher overall GPA.

Re: Big East Expansion

I thought I would comment on the topic since I have experienced both….
I received my undergraduate degree at FAU (lived on campus, joined a frat, did the whole thing)
I then received my law degree at FIU (lived on campus).

I will tell you while the law school at FIU was great, the rest of the school absolutely sucked. It is overcrowded and had zero spirit. Absolutely NO ONE would show up for football games.  The school administration at FAU was far superior to FIU's as well.  FIU is ten times the commuter school FAU is. Finally, FIU's campus is ugly and its location in Miami is horrible.  ENough said.

Law degree from FIU… so you went there in the last four years because that program is brand new.

So who did you cheer for at the Shula Bowl?  ;D

Of course I cheered for FAU at the shula bowl.  I can't stand fiu.  The toughest game was the shula bowl where FIU slaughtered us.  I was at the game with a bunch of FIU fans…. not fun.
