I thought I would comment on the topic since I have experienced both….
I received my undergraduate degree at FAU (lived on campus, joined a frat, did the whole thing)
I then received my law degree at FIU (lived on campus).

I will tell you while the law school at FIU was great, the rest of the school absolutely sucked. It is overcrowded and had zero spirit. Absolutely NO ONE would show up for football games.  The school administration at FAU was far superior to FIU's as well.  FIU is ten times the commuter school FAU is. Finally, FIU's campus is ugly and its location in Miami is horrible.  ENough said.

I agree with you on the commuter school thing. I've heard other reports that the FIU campus is really attractive. I haven't seen it in many years. I don't know first hand. Which is it? A very nice lady at the MSU game told me that the buildings are all different and don't match in architecture and style. She doesn't like it. Some of you may know her. She works in the college of engineering and she is originally from Michigan which is why she went to the game up there. Maybe early, mid 30s.

I know the campus is not in a good spot. That really can't compare to Boca.

They'd say it's "architecturally diverse" and inspired by other Miami architecture, with a lot of buildings in bright contrasting colors like these:

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/35/FIU_Rec_Center.JPG/350px-FIU_Rec_Center.JPG" ALIGN=LEFT>       <img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/55/FIU_Lakeview.JPG/350px-FIU_Lakeview.JPG">

It's not for everyone. Our newer buildings have some more curves and glass and we're starting to use some bolder colors such as the reds and grays in the Forkas Alumni center. Otherwise our "pastel colored box" style doesn't do much for people.

The lady at FIU probably has her own taste and that's it.
Everybody has a different point of view, and to be honest I kinda like those 2 bldgs.
FAU has their own style and I like it too.
Just wait till everything around the school gets done and you'll see how cool FAU is.

The lady I was talking about was at the MSU game (Michigan State) and she is an employee of the FAU college of engineering as well as a student at FAU. She does not like the clash of styles.

I might agree. If they were on their own lot, by themselves, they would probably look pretty cool. Combine them on the same campus with yet other styles and it would clash.

GPA/SAT scores????? They are a tier 4 school just like us.

Yes, GPA/SAT scores. For instance in 2007, FIU's average GPA/SAT was 3.7/1144.

Take a look at how we fare against other in-state institutions: http://www.clay.k12.fl.us/khh/Guidance%20Folder/Matrix.pdf

Did you know that for 2008, FAU's average GPA was 3.0? That's the lowest it's been in almost a decade. In fact, it's been on a steady decline over the last four years: 3.4 in 2005, 3.3 in 2006, 3.2 in 2007 and now 3.0 in 2008. See for yourself in the "combined GPA" section: http://iea.fau.edu/factbk/sat08.htm

What's next? 2.8 in 2009?

Not only that, this data I'm looking at (http://iea.fau.edu/factbk/grate08.htm) shows that only 15% of people who entered in 2003 graduated in the usual four years (2007). We know that's because of class availability fluctuating but is that factor considered when conference people look at our numbers? Probably not.

People with low GPAs can still go on to do amazing things but damn, we sure take a knock in credibility when people find out that our average GPA is that low. And FAU's statistics show that the lower the incoming GPA, the higher chance they'll fail out… which means our retention will be low and I think our overall academics will be considered when moving a school to a new conference.

Is that not correct? I'd love to be wrong and find out that we could move to CUSA or BE with numbers like ours.

I thought I read that due to the higher number of applicants this year, the stats were up. GPA and SAT/ACT.

Yeah, I read that too and likely posted it here. The Admissions people said it was their "best class ever." Apparently it wasn't…

3.0 just seems way too low. I don't understand it. Maybe it was a typo? The demand was up, the university was more popular, other schools were closing their doors, we got valedictorians…

nothing about the 3.0 makes any sense.

Re: Big East Expansion

I found a good source. The entering freshman was not 3.0. It was higher. According to this source, it went up. This is the fall 2008 State of the University address. The information would have to be accurate to be included.

You will have to look for it. Its there. I'm just trying to make it more difficult for certain individuals that come here looking for info about FAU.
