I think the $10,000 fee is looking to the future at a time when the $10,000 will seem like a bargain. Since it is a one time fee you take the hit now and hope that 10 years from now FAU gear is selling like crazy and you are reaping the benefits.

GO OWLS!!!

very well possible…….

Re: Blue Out - November 8th vs. UNT...

If you charge a %…. it could be a contractual nightmare. What if the business report only 1,000 shirts sold but really sold 1,500? Or 10,000?

And the lower the price to licence…the more people that licence our stuff. That's great, right? More competition and everyone has to lower their price to sell to the general public. But it also waters down our brand - a brand that had 84 logos and six school colors just five years ago.

While getting UM, FSU and UF stuff at every store (Wal Mart, Walgreen's, etc.) is good, it's exactly that… "you can get it anywhere."

I rather be able to say you can only get FAU stuff on campus, at select stores, and web sites/companies owned by FAU alumni.

Plus, we will receive better quality shirts and better designs with less competitors. Maye $10,000 is a bit steep, but anything less than $5,000 is too affordable for the avg. Joe.

I still hold to my idea of having FAU students do a two semester, six-credit internship selling, designing and marketing shirts, cups, mugs, etc. in a store housed either on-campus or across the street (ideal if anything ever opens up)

You could have….
Marketing majors dream up the ideas
Graphic design majors design them
Accountants do the budgeting
Business majors do the hiring, firing and scheduling of employees - FAU students only

The whole thing can be run by students and overseen by a professor or dean.

Another thing to think about is whether or not the NCAA gets a cut of the $10,000. Is university licensed also NCAA licensed apparel or is their a difference?

GO OWLS!!!

I guess we disagree on this point. My take is that the more stuff you see on the streets, in restaurants, etc that says FAU, the bigger the school becomes. Its image projects out there further and further. We WANT people to come to Boca and see people supporting the university. It's a hurdle, not a dead end.

I understand your concern about quality but you could put in a stipulation that, yeah the license is extremely cheap but the university has to approve all designs before they go into mass production otherwise the licensee must pay expensive damages to the university. It would be a pretty easy thing to set-up contractually and I'm sure FAU can either assign a person to oversee it or hire someone new that is dedicated to the position. A graduate student, even.

I'm with you on that one! I had a similar idea but it was more of a thrift store type of idea… people could buy/trade clothes, CDs, even art they made… most college students I know love to find gems at thrift stores.

lol……love the topic…….and the plug for the new compnay by smitty……

Simple answer to this all…..do it all without the license, but be creative (started with OwlCoholics and now with Dirty Birds)

there is no need to charge recent grads/students 10,000 bucks for a license……give me a BREAK!

i dont know a single student/recent alum that can flip that bill on their own…..

Phil and Dirty Birds…. I hope you didn't think my plug for OwlsGear was a stab at your stuff. I like your stuff too, but personally, I rather have the FAU logo on it. Phil, I was going to purchase that Owl Fingers shirt, and still will. I got your text and Facebook message late Monday evening.

And as far as charging recent grads/students the $10,000. It's a licensing fee that must be assessed fairly across the board.

spot on… i agree with you 100% F_O

smitty: it is absurd to "argue" that having your brand available from more companies is a "bad" thing… i'd LOVE for FAU to have that problem… that's not "watered down" at all… that's called having a successful brand that people want to buy

as for the various different logos: allowing your brand to be readily available to numerous companies has NOTHING to do with the ridiculous amount of logos FAU used to have… we went through a branding process (which i am proud to say i was a part of) and we re-branded FAU into 2 basic logos (head and body) and 3 versions of each (FAU on top, FAU plus banner, and nothing on top)… allowing multiples of companies to sell those versions of the logo (NOT the old logo, not the 37th version of the old logo, etc) JUST the current logos, is a plausible (and SMART) marketing decision

you don't see 3rd party hurricanes stores selling some weird, custom version of the "U" do you? no, you see the OFFICIAL and licensed "U" (http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=2848)… that's not watering down their brand at all… and furthermore, they are not using the old "UM" (http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=zhptz6rut5z4rf1fruyb) logo because that's not licensed by the university of miami anymore and it would violate their visual standards manual… as long as 3rd party companies follow the visual standards manual, there is nothing but positive for the brand of the university and its athletics programs

smitty, your arguments are rather weak, in my opinion

I agree, due to the fact that they dont let other people use the FAU logo I cant find FAU…a)golf bags, b) golf club covers, c) flag to fly in my front yard, d) folding style chairs for the tailgate etc.  All things that help get the name of the school more recognized and help alumni and parents show FAU pride.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.
