Bowl Scenarios As of 11/09/08
New Orleans Bowl $325,000
Papa John's $300,000
Independence $1,100,000
From a financial perspective the Independence Bowl is the best bet. It also tends to draw better teams (last year Alabama vs. Colorado) and it is played the Sunday after Christmas (Dec. 30th last year, Dec. 28th this year) which should mean a larger viewing audience.

Playing WV would likely be a slaughter, but on the other hand, we could probably make a profit off of that bowl, unlike the NO Bowl. I'm not a 100% on numbers so maybe we did make something off the NO bowl, but whatever it was it probably wasn't much. If we (unlikely) got into a bowl with WVU, I'd imagine there would be a bigger payout, with more exposure and a bigger crowd. Still at this point, I think it would be cool to have a USF/FAU St. Pete Bowl. That would fill the Trop no problem and make the innagural bowl there a huge success.
Pretty sure all the money we made off the NO Bowl went to travel expenses, so we really didn't make much if anything
that was confirmed yesterday when i was in the football office. they spent 6 days out there as a team. The room and food for the players alone was insane and then they paid for "x" amount of tickets per player……
We actually lost some money on the deal……

well hopefully people believe YOU when you say it, because when i said that a couple months ago, i was burned at the stakes for being a "wanna-be insider"
i sat in on some (limited, yet some) of the full staff meetings last year and i saw the physical numbers for myself… it was really crazy how quickly $325,000 goes when you have a division i-a football program
the st. petersburg bowl would be a blessing with a $1 million payout… because we ain't even gotta fly there! lol

Truth is that most teams lose money or make a very minimal amount on bowls. That is why the BCS is such garbage. The teams that make the BCS make lots of money. Everybody else is left with little to no revenue after all expenses are paid and the conference takes its cut.

Re: Bowl Scenarios As of 11/09/08
This situation also affects the Big 12, who currently has 7 eligible for a normal bowl line-up of 8. We need one of the top teams in the BCS national championship game to expand that lineup to 9. We then need the Aggies to lose 1, K-State to lose 1 and colorado to lose 2. Unfortuntely the Sun Belt alternate tie-in is not with the bottom of the barrel bowl for the Big12 (Texas Bowl) so we need all three to lose. 2 out of 3 and we are SOL.
Final Assessment
Independence Bowl is going to be very very difficult to land. We need Colorado to lose out, and K State, and Texas A&M to lose 1 more game. The SEC slot for that game will only drop to SEC #9 we land the Big 12 slot. If the Big 12 can send a team, the SEC will likely send their #7 or #8 to this game which would require a wholesale losing streak amongst the cusp SEC teams.
St. Pete Bowl is going to be difficult to land. To get the Big East slot we need Louisville and Notre Dame to lose all of their remaining games, and Rutgers to drop 2 of 3. If the Big East fills this spot we can expect CUSA to see this as a priority game over the Armed Forces Bowl v. the Mountain West Conference as well as over the New Orleans Bowl. If this happens we would need ALL of the 5 remaining cusp teams to become ineligible. They are Marshall (4-5), Memphis (5-5), Southern Miss (4-6), Houston (5-4), and UTEP (4-5). This game is interesting because we will be able to see if CUSA tries to screw the Sun Belt by sending a high ranking team to St. Pete, and also it will be interesting to see who plays in the New Orleans Bowl if that happens.
Papa Johns Bowl is likely the easiest to get a 2nd bid for the conference. Although the Big East spot is secure, the SEC #10 spot is not. The SEC will need to qualify 4/5 of its remaining cusp teams in order to fill this spot (finally some good odds).
