I e-mailed the marketing department off of the link on the website. I received a reply today. Someone is at least reading our concerns. Take the time and let them know what you think about the designs...

The designing company has a pretty impressive history including wisconson, and some other big schools that have slipped my mind.

They are all crappy but I would definetly pick the full body logo's over the stupid head and beak one's.

At least the full body ones have outstrecthed wings and claws.

Did I "hear" someone mention that they are getting rid of the owl?

So the designers hired by FAU did design for Wisconsin, huh? Very creative there. Isn't the helmet logo just a giant 'W'? Heck, I could come up with that and I don't get to charge consultant fees.

I would like to see public disclosure of this whole process. Were the designers ordered to stay away from designs in current use? What, exactly, were the marching orders, implications and so forth?

I still like the fighting owl used on those nifty 3X5 banners, some of the hats, this year's jerseys for the ice hockey club and so forth.

The designs above run from worse to worst. Even the best of the bunch, the full body owl, is so busy and so complicated that it would be ineffective. An excellent rule for logos is 'simplicity.' In addition to being simple, a logo must be of sharply contrasting colors so it can be 'read' from a distance, such as from across a stadium, on a banner or on a helmet – and in all light conditions – bright sun, twilight, under artificial light and so forth. These conditions and distances can provide entirely different 'reads' from ink on a letterhead viewed from eight inches away under optimum lighting conditions. Think of the very best NFL and collegiate logos: Simplicity, sharply contrasting colors, ease of 'reading' ….

But, what the heck. I'm not an 'artiste.' Just a fan.

OK, I know I'm going to get flammed by just about everyone for my forthcoming comments (because I know how it goes when you present an opinion that differs from the concensus), here is my take on the logos:

As one of the people who has been involved with the unversity brand redesign from the begining, I can say I have been pleased with just about every decision made in the process so far. (I was contacted last year by the marketing dept. to take part in the focus groups as an alumnus.)

There have been plenty of opportunities for students, alumni and the general public to be involved with the design process. The last online survey and review was open to everyone, and it honestly received more input than I thought it would. And trust me, they took every comment through the web site into consideration.

While I understand the reluctancy by some people to even alter the current logos, it is necessary for the university to "take the next step" and become more recognizable.

One of the biggest concerns was to make the new logo distinguishable from Tulane and Rice, the other two Division I schools with Owls as a mascot. (And also get away from the Wise potato chips logo. ;)) I think the design company has done that.

I'm glad the university and President Brogan have taken the time and considerable energy to unify all the school and athletic programs with consistent logos, that goes a long was for brand recognition.

I can't wait to see the same owl used for all our teams and be able to buy merch with a logo that the school actually uses.

I'm not saying any of the previous comments on this thred are right or wrong, I'm just stating my views on the subject. By the way, I voted for logo #2 for both the university mark and the athletic logo. Let the bashing begin…

No bashing from me. Just more civil disagreement. I agree that a single logo is necessary. But that alone does not require a change.

And I stand firm in the belief that simplicity and sharply contrasting colors are appropriate.

If I had to vote, I would vote for #2 - "Full Body" only
the "Head Only" is what I have a problem with. It seems out of proportion with the logo - It's still has that wise owl look.

I will agree that something had to be done to unify all the teams & departments.

The design company has a very impressive list of clients and they have done some great designs. I don't understand why ours don't seem to match the quality of other designs. A bit puzzling ???

Come on what are you looking at? They all suck (sorry but it is true) Almost every person on the board agrees that they do not reflect what we as fans would like to see. FAU needs tio do better…
