Campaigning for a Bowl

Campaigning for a Bowl

Its a shame the SBC schools have to schedule the Texas, Oklahoma, FSU, Florida schools to pay their bills. If not, FAU and other SBC schools could be scheduling most or ALL of their OOC games against CUSA, MAC and other non BCS conferences and have much better win/loss records. More SBC schools would be bowl eligible. If we could have played SMU, So Miss and Northern Illinois instead of Texas, Michigan State an Minnesota, things would be different. Our athletic budget would be in the red but we would have a winning record.

Also, not to step on anyone's parade, but here is the numbers that I obtained from tickets sold (through the school) for bowl games that both MTSU and FAU went to:

MTSU - Motor City Bowl 2006 - 1,200
FAU - New Orleans Bowl 2007 - 250

Remember, these are the ones sold through the school. Not the ones bought online or through the bowl's ticket office. That's why you always buy your tickets through the school, even though they may be higher.

I'm sorry, I don't believe the 250 number.  I distinctly remember reading something the week of the game stating that they had sold about 800 through the school.  If I remember correctly, we ended up bringing somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 fans.  Not that these numbers are great, but the number was way higher then 250.

As for this year, if it comes down to who plays closer to the bowl then so be it…nothing anyone can do about that.  But don't give me the home attendance arguement because attendance is a problem most weeks for every SBC school.  I watched our road conference games, as well as other televised SBC games.  There were maybe a couple thousand in the stands at ULM against FAU.  ASU had 8000 max for our game.  MTSU had their "blackout night" for our Tuesday ESPN game which looked like a good crowd, but other games I saw had under 10K actually in the stands.  Attendance is a Sun Belt problem, not just a FAU problem.

I'm not doubting that FAU brought more than 2,000 fans, but according to the records that I obtained, 250… is the number reported when they had to return tickets to the bowl office. That doesn't mean they didn't purchase over 800. It also doesn't take into consideration bowl tickets that were bought and then donated for charity. If that was the case, then I would say probably 800 might have been purchased. Middle purchased somewhere around 2,000, but donated 800 of those tickets went to charity.

Attendance is a problem yes, but when it comes to overall attendance figures….

23,005 UL-Lafayette (4)
21,105 Arkansas State (5)
20,227 Middle Tennessee (5)
19,983 Troy (4)
19,519 ULM (6)
16,956 North Texas (5)
16,121 Florida Atlantic (5)
14,964 Florida International (4)

Will a bowl want a team that averages nearly 15K or a team that averages 23 or 20 K? FAU's best hope is the St. Petersburg bowl becomes available. Otherwise, FAU will go behind ULL/MTSU in line. The bowls would ideally like ULL, but they will take MTSU over FAU.

As far as MT's attendance goes, the only number I believe that was blown out of proportion was their game with UNT. The other numbers were pretty realistic.

And according to Ted Hutton:

"I have been in touch with the Sun Belt offices, and they are saying three Belt teams will get in, but there appears to be no takers for the Owls at this point. Troy, Arkansas State and winner of ULL and MTSU game appear to be sure things."

Enough with the bowl situation, I don't even know what to believe.
I will write my emails to the bowl people and that's it.
I hope we get picked and if that happens; I'll see you all somewhere around this nation.

GO OWLS you make me proud.

well not to rain on your parade but i cant see anyone taking mtsu either….

Realistically were looking at 3 bowl bids (great for the belt)

Troy
ULL
Ark State

Well, yeah. Right now, ULL would be the favorite. But the winner of the ULL/MTSU game will go to a bowl. Not FAU.

Not to be rude, but I hope you guys lose…I dont want you guys representing the Belt this year in a bowl game, I think you will lose.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Make sure to e-mail Mark Meadows at the PapaJohn's Bowl. He's a good guy and will probably read your e-mail. I know all the Blue Raider fans like him when he was our associate AD.

Re: Campaigning for a Bowl

Why would either bowl in Louisiana want ULL. As said, they are right around the corner. Meaning they may pull more fans but they are also much more likely to simply come to town for the game and then go home, no hotels, no restaurants, no car rentals. That is all a big part of what a bowl is supposed to do for the local economy.

Re: Campaigning for a Bowl

That is a very big point about out of towners spending $$$. If we did go back to NO you can almost bet the turn out would be doubled. My reason for saying that is It would be against Memphis, and they would probably love the opportunity to go at it again. They would also bring more fans which means more $$. remember we were there the whole week and fans were there for more than half that period. Most Memphis fans came in the night before or that day. The arguement about local teams coming means less $$$. Illi. put your finance hat on and pipe in on this, does that make sense or not???  :o
