Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

I saw this posted on Ted's blog but haven't seen it on here. I'm posting this in Football because I know the most people will see it here.

"Former FAU linebacker Cerge Sincere is helping to put together a command post where folks can drop off relief supplies for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. It will open on Friday morning in front of the Oxley Center."

I'm sure anything any of us could do will help. We have a large Haitian population down here as well as a number of football players who have family and friends living in Haiti

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

Fyi…This went out from FAU today:

As you’ve all heard by now the Caribbean country of Haiti suffered a debilitating earthquake that has crippled their infrastructure.  Accordingly, FAU and the Boca Raton community will be asked to help in the support of goods (non-perishable food, toiletries and clothing).

Former FAU linebacker Cerge Sincere, of Haitian decent, is helping to put together a command post where folks can drop off relief supplies for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. It is open NOW in front of the Oxley Center ending at 6 p.m. today 1/15/10.

If you can spare a case of water or find some unused clothes in the back of your closet - any small donation would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

With all the help that country got over the past several years, you would think that the construction would be better. That place did not look much different before the earthquake. They are such a corrupt country full of murderers, rapists, thieves, etc. When the hurricane hit there a few years ago, a lot of the supplies sent there went to govt owned stores where they sold it back to the people. They also sold a bunch of the supplies to other countries near them ( generators, medical supplies, etc.). Be careful who you give money to. There are many local haitans who are asking for cash from people saying that they are sending it to their family there while they are keeping for themselves. Always write a check out to the organization and ask for a receipt where you can use it for your taxes.

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

Well there are no building codes in that country where as in the U.S. a 7.0 earthquake would be devastating but buildings wouldn't collapse as easily. When the buildings are just thrown together and there's no rules to follow they are going to come down with ease.

There will be people trying to capitalize on any disaster. After 9/11 people were selling stuff on the streets and making money before the police shut them down. It's not just Haiti. I do agree that you need to be careful who you donate too. There are a lot scams out there to just try and take your money.

I recommend texting the word HAITI to 9099 and having $10 added on to your cell phone bill. I know money is tight for everyone but I'm sure we can all afford $10. That's just 2 less beers at the Lodge or Ale House or when you go to Publix drop some money in the donation box at the register.

Wow, not sure what rock you live under, but I am from the US and we have plenty of corruption, murderers, rapists, and thieves.  Because people live with oppressed governments, doesn't make the citizens less hungry or thirsty.  Yes, some of the donations will end up with the wrong people.  I guarantee you, it happened here during Katrina.

This is ridiculous. What happened in New Orleans after Katrina? Natural disasters bring out the best and worst and the tragedy is magnified in an impoverished country like Haiti (the most impoverished in the Western hemisphere). Get some perspective before typing such compassionless trash.

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

Just got back from the Oxley. The support was very noticeable. My roommate and I dropped off some water and some canned foods. They had stacks of waters, boxes of canned food and more and more people were driving up and dropping things off. Used clothes, new clothes, baby clothes it doesn't matter. Whatever you have laying around head on over to the Ox and drop it off. When I dropped off the water Cerge came over to shake my hand and thank us for dropping off stuff. You don't need to spend a lot of money. I spent about $10 in canned goods and water

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

Haiti is the most corrupt country in the world.  There is no order there. At least in katrina there was some order. Look it up if you don't believe me. I guarantee you that a year from now the place will look the same. Did you know that the people eat mudd there mixes with oil, salt, sugar, and some other spices. They are called mudd pies/cookies. There is no nutritional value to it. This happens while there has been billions pumped into that country. I am just warning you guys to be careful where you donate. A lot of us were duped by a group of Haitians when the last big hurricane hit there. A group of them came to our work claimed they were from a church and asked if we can donate money and supplies. Well there ended up being about $5000 donated to them along with a lot of food and clothing. A few months after we gave them that, we found out they they were a fraudulant organization. They kept everything given to them.

Re: Cerge Sincere Help for Haiti

Just an example of how corrupt it is there, particularly where it says "the haitian govt doesn't use it's own resources for sanitation, instead it depends on charity"….that it messed up.
