The UP has gone through some troubling times - especially before current adviser Michael Koretzky got there. Koretzky cleaned up the UP and has really restored the credibility the student newspaper…well…never had.

The credibility comes and goes but I remember the… self-gratification… article you are referring to that nearly snuffed out the UP altogether.

To those who don't know, the campus newspaper is in a constant state of flux because even though they have 20-25 people on their staff list, only a handful of them are really, truly dedicated to the paper and producing quality work. There are times when (UP advisor) Koretzky will do something like pick up the latest edition of the paper and say, "You misspelled a lot of things in here, including spelling Hillary Clinton with one L. I might understand this if it were some obscure freshmen at FAU but there's no excuse for this… to get past both the writer and the copy editor. This is a very simple thing. You all know how to use the Internet. So someone tell me why Hillary Clinton was spelled with one L."

To be fair, the handful of people who do good work are now working in the industry for newspapers, magazines or newsblogs.

Some of the most credible stories include:

A 2004 story what one the Associated Collegiate Press News Story of the Year about SGs 25 % pay raise and them shutting down and suppressing the UP. I was part of that staff and we had four or five stories that year that really started the success of the investigative journalism in the UP, including uncovering the "retreat" the executive board took at the end of their term for "team building" to Key West for three days.

This made me so mad. I think that a lot of them deserve it because SGA can be a strenuous, time-consuming job but to do it in the shady way they did is not respectable.

I don't quite understand why the UP doesn't come down on the Program Board for various issues like putting out a calendar specifying events without locations ("walk around and campus and find our skydiving simulator!") but I heard a rumor that when the UP bashes campus events, Dr.Brown pays them a personal visit to say "Freedom of the press absolutely but I'd prefer if you didn't do that."

In 2005 and 2006, those stories continued - especially with the story on SG President Kirk Murray and the book vouchers.

What was the outcome for that? Like a slap on the hand? I can't remember but I didn't think they took a strong enough stance on it to deter future repeats…

Anyway, the newspaper seems to be getting better. Warman is one of their better journalists IMO. I know a couple of people who have said he could write about sports professionally and I expect him to. We should all want him to because he'd be able to slip in some good words about FAU, thus bolstering our national awareness.

It's tough to misinterpret "ornery bastards." And I think it would be tougher for Jay to make that up.

I have a hard time believing that the FAU sports editor lied - why doesn't Howard stand by what he said?

I don't!

This is an easy fix…

Re: Coach clarifies comments

Every Texas fan that isn't a complete homer knows that its true…and some are on message boards saying just that, that Texas Football has gotten soft.  Saying that doesn't mean that we will win, they still have talent, they just haven't been a hard hitting football team as of late.

A real Texas fan knows that this is true and wouldn't be offended by it.

My hope is that this hooplah forces the Texas hand, makes them play a different style of ball than they have been playing and therefore make even more mistakes.  Who knows, its a battle of message boards.

It is the psychological warfare before the game. Hope that the comments alter the gameplan or the play of Texas, which is more likely and hopefully it will be enough to cause some miscues that favor FAU.

The Texas Coach laughed about the comments, saying, "Number one, we don't concern ourselves with what the other coaching staffs says. Coach Schnellenberger has been around a long time and anything he would say… he's trying to motivate his team."

How do I know? Because it was recorded not just by the reporter there, but by a videographer. Given that, this is the latest statement from The Voice:

"If I was recorded as saying that, then I must have said it. What I remember about the conversation it was more about if we are going to win the game we are going to have to go out there and out-hit them and win it on the physical side. We are not going to go out there and exchange touchdowns with them."

"The game will be won and lost by the players on the field that day, what all of us old guys say doesn’t matter."
