Conference Membership Discussion

Post

AAC schools are much more attractive than CUSA programs as most came from the CUSA we hoped to be in. AAC East; UCF, USF, East Carolina, Cincinnati, Temple,. AAC West; Navy, Houston, SMU, Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa. In fact 8 of the 11 came from CUSA pre FAU when it WAS a much better conference with a MUCH better media deal. And the media deals now between CUSA and the AAC don't compare at all!

Just pointing out that a small window may have opened and we should go after it aggressively, if we don't a competitor will!.
Oh, the idea floated of allowing football only for Air Force or Army wont fly as the ACC is not allowing UCONN  to stay in football only!

I think a few of you must believe I am belittling FAU - and I am not.  I totally agree that the school is up-and-coming.  My daughter got into several schools (in-state and out), and I was a driving force in her choosing FAU because of the location, growth potential, location, way they treated her/us, did I mention location?

I would be thrilled if there was a move to the AAC because the East would be awesome.  UCF and USF as mentioned would be sellouts.  And the question about Cincinnati or Temple or Memphis being good for attendance - all are schools that have recently been in the top-25 (as in the last 2 years), routinely go to bowl games, and are much more identifiable than several of the teams in C-USA.  Also, IMHO trips to Philly, Cincy, and Memphis would beat the pants off trips to some of the locales of our current conference brethren.  Even Greenville, NC for an ECU game is a very good party, nice stadium, great crowds (they support the team even when they suck).

I just don't think the AAC will come calling, but I would love it if they did.

another reason I dont see us moving up anytime soon is the rest of our facilities are in need of serious upgrades. I know the Burrow is getting one, but the rest need a serious facelift. That is mentioned in the capital master plan for the university. Yet like everything else, it takes money.

First people need to understand that there is no conference independent board making these decisions, it is just the schools themselves and in most cases, the vote needs to be unanimous.

There is only one question schools ask when deciding to add someone.

Will adding X school make my school money.

Going 11-3 and to the heart of Dallas Bowl doesn't change that for FAU. Again USF and UCF will not want to help us grow as we compete with them. Schools like ECU do not care about our weather, new football building, or the great baseball history we have, or even that us getting to play USF and UCF would be fun.

They just want to know is when the TV contract comes who will add the most money. END. OF. STORY.

I have read a few articles and message boards of other G5 schools. Everyone is doing the same "we are building blah blah blah"

UAB is getting a new stadium and is in a strong college football area that the AAC doesn't currently cover.

Georgia State is 45,000 students in metro Atlanta who is building dorm after dorm to become more traditional.

We are not going anywhere.

I think Shane's got the right idea (but really, I don't know anything, ever).

I'm more curious now, if North Texas or UAB or whoever, leaves for the AAC, who are we pulling from (probably) the Sunbelt? Or do we (and is that even an upgrade any more?)?

2 things they are looking at when expanding:
- TV market.
- facilities.

They obviously look a lot harder at the TV market - just look at Rutgers and Maryland being in the B10. It's the biggest factor because it ends up being how the conferences negotiate TV contracts. That being said, if uconn leaves the AAC, then they may need to replace it with a team of at least the same media market to not be in breach of the new media deals (that is conjecture and operates on an assumption of the AAC media contracts).

They do look at facilities to a certain extent: poor facilities will keep you out, good facilities will not get you in. Our football stadium is good enough to stop another conference (AAC) from saying no, but our other facilities are a total joke.

Unfortunately, the team down south beats us in both TV market and facilities. Luckily their (fiu) athletics department is beyond inept.

Their baseball stadium is far nicer. Basketball arena is a bit better. Football stadium is worse, but not by enough to keep them out.

Remember what I said above: market gets you in, stadium can keep you out.

Their market is far bigger than ours (on paper).
