And what about the last 27 years Drew?? Say since 1980 or so?? I guess history only goes from 1912 to 1979 in Memphis. Remember the golden years and nothing more. It is like this, I have a friend who loves Minnesota and all he can say is "In the 60s we were awesome. We won 5 national titles prior to the 60s." Guess what, Minnesota lost to FAU this year. Past glory means nothing for present and future success.

OK, you're contradicting yourself here…

you say that "Past glory means nothing for present and future success." but yet you make a point to mention our lack of success in the 80-90's…if it's so unimportant, then why bring it up?

your original argument was that Memphis had only been in 5 bowls in it's history, so we must not be any good…i simply pointed out that Memphis was damn near a power football team in the 50-60's…when our success lead to no post season the university Admins decided to focus on basketball…a sport where there was a more level playing field for a team like Memphis…go look at the basketball Top 25 polls and tell me what you see…Memphis is #2 in both polls.

Memphis is one of a VERY select few to make the NCAA basketball tourney, the NCAA baseball tourney, and an NCAA Bowl game this year.

Re: Congrats from the Tigers

I am not contradicting myself, I am simply pointing out that you only decided to discuss Memphis' best years. I didn't say Memphis was good or bad over the last 27 years. I only wonder why you didn't choose to include those years in your in-depth analysis of Memphis' rich tradition.

As for basketball, I don't care…we are talking football. This is a football thread. Memphis basketball has absolutely nothing to do with the New Orleans bowl. Oh by the way, FAU baseball holds the record for the longest winning streak in NCAA history…doesn't have anything to do with the New Orleans so it makes no sense why I would bring it up kind of like you bringing up basketball. Get the point??

but you still are…

you bring up the fact that we only have 5 bowls…OK, that's cool…i point out that Memphis should have around 13-14 bowl games but because we were a D-1 indy at that time we didn't have access to any bowl games…then all the sudden the past means nothing and now is all that matters…you can't have your cake and eat it too…i agree that the past is just that, the past…but you can't mock the history of a school and then say the past means nothing…obviously it means something to you because you keep bringing it up.

you also asked about out history from 1980 - 1990's…during that time span we had 5 winning seasons…not one bowl invitation during that span…that's why the UofM made a conscious effort to focus on basketball back in the 70's…it became clear that Memphis wouldn't be "allowed" to compete in football.

you say you don't care about basketball…of course you don't…FAU has had no major D-1 success at basketball…one NCAA tourney run and all the sudden FAU fans will have been b-ball fans for YEARS…Memphis on the other hand is a basketball school…that's what we are…we are also very competitive at sports like Football, Baseball, Soccer etc…but we're a basketball school.

that's too bad…Football/Basketball/Baseball are VERY enjoyable sports…while Memphis is good at Soccer, i've never been a big Soccer fan…i think i played it back in 5th and 6th grade, that's about all the contact i've had with the sport…football and basketball are equal in my eyes, i love them both…baseball is a close 3rd.

for an athletic department to grow, it must be well rounded…

i'm sure he COULD, LOL…but i'll let Cal handle basketball, and let Tommy West run the football team…they are both good coaches.
