Great win last night. Very happy.

I wasn't able to listen to most of the game, about the last 22 minutes of play, had a work dinner.

For anyone who did listen, what happened to the defense? I was shocked to see such a high scoring game. I thought this line was going to be solid this year. 31 points to UAB ain't going to cut it.

Are we in for another long season?

IMHO,

The simplified Defenseive schemes HAVE worked, They are allowing the D to release and play agrresiviely.

The problem is that after adjustments those simple schemes will be exploited by specific play calling. Hence why the D did pretty good in the 1st half and then not so well in the 2nd.

The will continue to improve and as they get comfortable with the primary package Van can work in a few other schemes.

They kept us in the game and got us points. Cant ask for much more from a D that was ranked 112th last year.

They HAVE improved.
The D played much better in the second half imo

Re: Defense

Hey, it was a great game to follow and great win, but the defense really bent, a lot. UAB put together a perfect 2-minute drill to end the first half and went almost the entiure length of the field at the end. The defense could not stop Isabelle when it mattered. The pass defense was good.

Re: Defense

Great adjustments by Van V in the second half. We swapped out our OLBs for DBs and really started to shut down (as best as we could) their offense and that's what caused the pick 6 by harsted (he was in as a LB) and shifted momentum.

X limped off the field in the first half and was quiet the rest of the game. That ankle still looks tender.

First post ever and already pushing for new rules. Maybe there should be a rule that if you haven't posted at least 100 times you cannot suggest the implementation of a new rule  ;)

Now that's a rule I can get behind. But the new guy was just excited about his team and the unexpected victory so I don't want to give him too hard of a time.

Welcome FAUgoowls.

Thanks for the welcome.  FYI guys - I may be a new to the boards but have been behind FAU football since 1999 when there wasn't even a team or players.  Looking forward to a GREAT season.  It has been a very long (hot) road in preseason and now we will can build from there.  What a great start!!!!!

Re: Defense

They made David Isabelle look like the next Joe Webb..

345 yards on the ground for UAB last night was more than last seasons game when they gave up 330.

Were going to see some more running quarterbacks, so hopefully we can address the issue.

Overall a solid showing from the defense!

Re: Defense

I think we can build from this, and in a way, good to get this nightmare scenario of a mobile athletic qb running up and down the field — out of the way. I wish I could have watched the game, btw I tip my hat to Mr. Lavicka, his calls had me absolutely freaking out. From the radio calls it sounded like we did make good adjustments, but then faltered late in the 4th. We had good containment in the 2nd half up to that point. The first 2 td's should not have happened. From what I heard a lot of arms flailing, but no bodies moving toward the ball early in the game.

Hope the coaches are picking apart the video, and that our D will be ready from the kickoff next week at Ford Field.

Beware the talons of the Mighty Owls!
