Florida Cracker? Born and raised in South Florida, never heard that one before. I did get called a Florida Orange, once.

I had always heard the term came from the "Crack" of the bull whips.

This wikipedia (yes I know, its wikipedia and is not always right) entry seems to back that up.

Its true that Florida cracker originated from the whip of the cows as it refers to the florida cowboys in the early 1900's who would herd their livestock from tallahassee through ocala down to the orlando area each year(I know this because its in a local museum in Bartow in which I now live). It has evolved now to refer to those who were born and raised in florida. Which i also am one of the few and proud.

As for the redneck comment, I think it is kind of dumb since there are likely three times the amount of rednecks in florida as there are in Nebraska.

Hey everyone, a new poster here.  I am a Husker Fan that ended up on the East Coast.  I am not sure I will comment on the Hick comment in the OP.  Anyway, I am hoping to have some fun football discussions with fans from a different perspective.  Sometimes you can get too lost in the details for your own team.

Thanks Rick!  I will take a gander at the archives some time this weekend and see if I can stir up some further conversation.  However I love CFB in general so I may just get involved in more topics than that!

I think it's fine, they are hicks and everyone is beatable.  He didn't say we ARE going to beat Nebraska, big difference.

I know a few people from Nebraska and they have no problem being called hicks.  It's like being called a Florida Cracker.

Might as well join this discussion. I am a sixth-generation Floridian who now lives in Colorado. I do not view Nebraskans as hicks. Actually, if I had to suffer a car breakdown and need local help in either South Florida or Nebraska, I would take Nebraska almost any day. I would have a greater chance of someone stopping who genuinely wanted to help and a lesser chance of someone stopping who wanted to steal my car.
