Re: ESPN Pre-Season Top 25 Projection

We are actually in a much better position right now then ever before as far as development and being prepared to face these higher caliber teams.  We should have a good veteran team, not counting 04, just because of the level of talent is at a higher level then in 04 and are in a better mind frame as a program to be able to compete with these teams.  The players all have the taste in their mouths on what it takes to play with the big boys, not saying it will be any easier, but as far as their mind set, they will in a much better position heading into these games then in the past.  That mental aspect is a huge factor and we should be much better prepared this upcoming season to handle and hopefully be more competitive in those games.

I have no doubt they'll be in the right mindset to play Texas and Michigan State. The question is whether the talent can match up.. can our defense make the sacks and stifle the RBs, can our offense give Rusty enough time so that the WR can get enough distance in the coverage to make their plays, etc

Re: ESPN Pre-Season Top 25 Projection

Good points, are we as talented as Texas - no.

Mind set is so important in sports and sometimes makes ups for the lack of.  I am not sure were we are as a team yet and cannot not base it on anything from last year,  I want to see how the players preform in the falls before I make any decisions on the upcoming season.  There is always room for improvements, I tought that last years defense should have been better, yet we did have some key injuries that didn't help either, and in the process we gained some depth which hopefully will pay dividend this year.

1st team'ers should be OK, I am a bit more concerned with the depth of the OL, I could just be overly concerned for no reason.

You bring up some great points. Remember though when we went up to UF they were the defending national champions we "didn't stand a chance". I don't know if it was FAU showing they're for real or the Gators taking us for granted but for at least 1 half we hung right in there with them. Not saying we would have won had Rusty and the 1st teamers stayed in but it wouldn't have been the blowout that it turned into.

Which is why I think that we will keep it interesting with Texas but I don't think we're at the point yet that we can beat a team like Texas, of course I hope I am proved wrong.

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

If we didnt stand a chance, then why should we go to texas?

This is why the games are played….any given saturday anything can happen.

I know its said a lot, but ask Mich.

That was close to a miracle.  Nobody is saying there isn't a chance, we are just speculation on how much of a chance.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Re: ESPN Pre-Season Top 25 Projection

Sure there is always a chance.

What I am more interesting in, is seeing how the players preform under that higher competitive nature and we must also take into account that this is not a conference game for Texas and their approach will differ then ours will.

Howard did mentioned earlier that our training days are over, so I must assume that our preparations will also differ going into these OC games this year.  We'll find out what this all means come August 30th.

Re: ESPN Pre-Season Top 25 Projection

Here's ESPN's updated top 25 pre-season

8. Texas Longhorns
Coach Mack Brown continues to haul in top-five recruiting classes each year, but bringing in defensive coordinator Will Muschamp from Auburn might have been his biggest addition in 2008. Muschamp wants the Longhorns to be meaner and more aggressive this season after they allowed 371.2 yards per game in 2007. On offense, Texas still hasn't settled on a starting tailback to replace Jamaal Charles, who led the Big 12 in rushing before bolting for the NFL draft.

24. Michigan State Spartans
The Spartans were very close to accomplishing really big things in coach Mark Dantonio's first season, losing five games by six points or less. If Michigan State can rebuild both of its lines and replace top receivers Devin Thomas and Kellen Davis, they might win those close games in 2008. The Spartans open the season at California and play Michigan and Penn State on the road, but Notre Dame, Iowa, Ohio State and Wisconsin each go to East Lansing, Mich.

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!
