Fall Practice Notes for 08-29-10

With the first game of the season four days away, the Florida Atlantic football team held a lighter practice session Sunday afternoon, in which the players limited the contact and continued preparations for UAB.

“We wanted to take a shortened practice, and we did, and the players respond with a jacked up intensity level and got some good work done,” Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger said after the workout.

Due to weather, the Owls moved the practice time to 3:30 p.m. and once again held it at the track complex; where they primarily offense and defense continued to work against scout team units.

Center Jimmie Colley participated in the whole session on the first team. The rest of the starting offensive line appears to be Max Karrick and Joseph Bailey at the tackles, with Andy Czuprynski and Chris Newbold at the guard positions. Erik Hansen also rotated in at one of the guard spots as well.

Fullback Tony Moore ran a few plays with the first team offense, and got in during certain situation's in which his blocking skills were called upon. Moore also had a short carry up the middle against the scout team.

The d-line looks to have found a rotation, with Kevin Cyrille and Jamere Johnson as the first team defensive ends, and Jarvis Givens and Dino Cox as the starting tackles. Cory Henry and Martin Wright have been the back-up ends with Jimmy Jean and Andrew Stryffeler working as the second team tackles.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Michael Lockley returned to action and had a nice pass break up, reaching over a receiver and batting the ball away. The defense primarily ran the nickel package throughout the afternoon, with Keith Reaser as the third cornerback.

“The injuries are slowly getting healed, the handling of our assignments and being able to work as one is improving, the moral is improving, and everything is on pace to be prepared when we get up there,” Schnellenberger said.
