Fall Practice Notes for 08-18-10

The Florida Atlantic football team held a competitive two-hour practice session Wednesday afternoon, in which Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger thought the Owls’ defense outperformed the team’s offense.

Multiple turnovers, big hits and stopped drives enabled that billing, as the offense had few big plays and never
found the end-zone.

“It (the defense) was a little bit better than the offense,” said Schnellenberger afterwards. “We have been shaky all along, but we may have been a little more shaky today,” Schnellenberger said of the offense’s outing.

Cornerback Curtis Cross started the turnovers early, grabbing an interception in the 7-on-7 passing drills near the sideline. The defense continued to outplay the offense in the passing skeleton, and forced more bad throws and multiple incompletions.

Once the team got into its full 11-on-11 scrimmage, a verbal argument broke out between linebacker Alex Pattee and fullback Xavier Stinson towards the end of a play. Coaches threatened to put both players on the sideline, but allowed them to remain on the field and meet again when Stinson was tackled on a carry up the middle.

The offense tried to get things going by switching to a fast-paced no-huddle attack, however Cross and the defense responded again, as he intercepted another Jeff Van Camp throw to the flats. Fellow cornerback Keith Reaser followed the turnover up with the hit of the day, when he knocked the ball out of a receiver’s hands and fired up the entire defensive sideline.

A bright spot for the offense was the play of tight end Alex Fick, who had multiple catches with the second team and a big
reception that gave the offense it’s only red zone trip. Linebacker Michael Lockley quickly ended that visit when he recorded the defense’s third interception of the day and returned it for 30-yards. Avery Holley found back-to-back catches before practice ended.

Schnellenberger left practice early to catch a flight to Detroit where he will participate in a Thursday morning press conference promoting the Owls September 11th game against Michigan State in Detroit.

FAU will hold its final three-a-day of fall camp Thursday, and Assistant Head Coach Kurt Van Valkenburgh will run the first two practice sessions of the morning. Schnellenberger plans to be back for the last session of day at 4:30.
