Fall Practice Notes & Pics for 08-14-10
FAU held a light practice today with an extended walk through of yesterday's scrimmage and some special teams work consisting of kick off returns.
DeAndre Richardson, Jeff Blanchard, Travis Jones, Blake Bierman, and Willie Floyd rounded out the kick off group, while Tavious Polo and Keith Reaser comprised the punt group.
Coach Schnellenberger had some interesting tidbits to offer afterwards:
On the first scrimmage and Offensive line issues
"Yesterday looked a lot like a first practice of a veteran defensive team and a young offensive football team. Going out I was more concerned about getting the ball to the quarterback from our new centers, and that happened three times. But that wasn't a major part of the problem, a major part of the problem is that the offensive line is having an additional headache by having to play a different position or being new at their positions."
On the defense
"The defense is playing with poise and confidence and made some big plays…whenever the defense can come up with a couple of turnovers, we have a football game and sometimes the defense will win. Obviously a 10 point win by the defense is pretty big, particularly when they score 34 points."
On preparations for the first game
"There is still a lot of time for us to prepare for the first ballgame. Morale is high, the focus is good, and I expect to continue on having good practices."
On Travis Jones' performance yesterday
"He's a good runner and he's a good football player. We need a couple of our younger back steps forward and make things happen."
On the offensive line and potential new starters
"We had planned to get Nweze, as well as Newbold, to get them both ready. I don't know which one will get the most playing time, I don't know who will start, but Nweze looked like he handled it a little more smoothly." And still fooling around with Williams, he's a big strong guy who has been here with us for a year. So we got to get them lined up and get them as many reps between now and then as we can.
What he didn't say is that the ones who are injured will be back in time. Previously he had said that he thought two could be ready, so not sure that is the case anymore.
Xavier Stinson was running some drills on the sidelines, and looks to be pretty close to returning.
Avery Holley was participating in the walk through as well.
JC transfer Paul Moore, who coach Allen was hoping to put into the mix for some playing is having surgery for a hand injury suffered last week and is expected to miss the first game.
FAU’s equipment staff has added a sale to Fanfest, offering football jerseys, sneakers, soccer cleats and athletic bags, etc. Fanfest is schedule for 2 p.m., Saturday, August 21 and will provide an opportunity to see the Owls second scrimmage of the 2010 preseason.
The team returns to three-a-day action tomorrow with session from 8:00-9:15 a.m., 10:30-noon, and 4:30-6:00 p.m.
