COACH BILLY JOE, TWO ASSISTANTS RELEASED TUESDAY
University to begin national search for replacement on Wednesday

Coach Billy Joe and two assistants were released from the university on Tuesday.

June 14, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida A&M University announced Tuesday at afternoon press conference that it was terminating contract of head football coach William "Billy" Joe, due to violation of NCAA rules in the football program.

In addition, the contracts of two assistant football coaches - assistant head coach/offensive line coach Gregory Black and running backs coach Mario Allen - will not be renewed. Their current contracts were to expire June 30.

"We truly regret having to make this move today," said FAMU Interim Athletic Director E. Newton Jackson, Ph.D. "Coach Joe and his staff have given many years of quality service to the football program and the university.

"However, rules compliance must be paramount in any program, and given the fact that we are under intense NCAA scrutiny at this time, we felt it necessary to address any program concerns in an expeditious manner to protect the integrity of the institution and the athletic program," Jackson concluded.

Jackson also indicated that a national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

The university's athletic program has undergone a self-investigation into possible NCAA rules violations, which is a followup of the school's own self disclosure last summer of 196 possible infractions.

?Coach Billy Joe served as head football coach at Florida A&M for 11 seasons (1994-2004), compiling an 86-46-0 record, with one Black College National title in 1998, four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles (1995, 1996, 2000*, 2001*) and seven postseason appearances between 1995 and 2001.

?Joe also holds a 237-108-4 overall record in 31 years as a collegiate head coach

Interesting timing here. As I recall when the initial investigation was concluded(semi), he was absolved of any knowledge about the 196 violations.Everyone around him knew about it be he didn't. ???

Then a few coaches and higher ups were fired/quit and/or reassigned. The new folks wanted to terminate him when they came in but his contract called for a buyout of the 270K they owed him. They didn't have the funds for the buyout so they cut the athletic budget to try and force him to quit. He wouldn't.

Fast forward till now; A new person is in change. Again. She has some background is in NCAA compliance. Any knowledge or participation of NCAA violations calls for immediate termination WITHOUT compensation. His contract is now voided! Hmmmm.

The season is fast approaching and those players don't even have a clue about their future!!

Maxx or ARod,

Any word on what you guys are going to do about the playing site yet? Dolphins stadium is booked and your place will be JAMMED before tickets are sold.
With all this happening so late in the game, FAMU just might try to buy the game back to Tally.

As far as I know, we are waiting for word from what ESPN is planning to do with the UM/USF game that is scheduled for that week, they may want to move it to Thursday night so that it can be on TV, if they do that, we will be at the Orange Bowl, if they don't move it, then we may play it at the Cage and just be a really packed house (something I wouldn't mind but I know we need the attendance of the Orange Bowl)

That would be nice if ESPN get you guys on a Thursday night. I know the home field gate would be nice to have but the Orange Bowl crowd would be jumping that night!

Sorry if I was confusing, I meant the UM game would be moved to Thursday so that they can get on TV and we would get the OB on Saturday.

Ooops…

It still would be nice for any TV time for you guys. You guys have been on TV a lot anyway in such a short time frame of playing football.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if we had some games on Sunshine again or even on NBC again. Hopefully we'll also get some games that will be on ESPNU with the Sun Belt's game package.
