FAU Football Spring Camp April 10: Curtis, Wright break down Scrimmage #2

QB's Rotate

Florida Atlantic held their second scrimmage of spring camp Wednesday morning, and with the media kept on the outside from almost the entire session, not much was revealed.

Stephen Curtis shed some light on the quarterback situation following the scrimmage, and gave a breakdown of the morning's competition.

"We just rotated every series pretty much," Curtis said.

The redshirt-junior explained that the offense performed well as a unit, and that the repetitions under center were split evenly between Melvin German, Jaquez Johnson and himself. With no candidate yet to emerge as the team's starter, Curtis feels that a decision from the coaches could soon be on the way.

"Will probably know more towards the end of next week, or summer. I'm not sure when they're going to announce that," Curtis said.

Offensive coordinator Brian Wright is one of the individuals the will be making the decision, and he had a mixed message on the performances by the quarterbacks in the scrimmage.

"They all did good. We just had one pick, which I think from the field it looked like a good decision, just a bad throw. All three of those guys did some good things, of course all three of those guys did some other things that we're going to have to get much better at the position with," Wright said.

FAU has just three practices remaining before the team's Spring Game next weekend, and that means crunch time for Curtis and the other passers. Wright is looking for a quarterback to step and perform well in the pressure of a game situation – and each will get an opportunity.

Curtis, who threw the lone interception Wednesday, feels that the main priority for him in the final scrimmage will revolve around the basics.

"Really the fundamentals, the footwork and the timing," Curtis said. "That's what we have been working on all spring and focusing on now."

Deep Ball

If you watched the Owls play last season, you saw the potential for a long passing game to develop with a talented group of wide receivers. Wednesday morning, the vertical attack was on display.

"When we called a deep ball, we were able to get it protected and caught - so I'm happy with that," Wright said.

Despite the shuffle of players, the offensive line was able to give the quarterbacks time to throw the ball, and that resulted in numerous long gains. Both Curtis and German were able to complete deep passes.

"It was good to see our guys go up and make some big catches, and us protect some of the deeper routes that are down field when the QB is standing there and throwing it…. We're not going to have that many opportunities for deep passes in a real game, but for the most part I was pleased," Wright said.

Practice Observations

There wasn't much to be seen, and Carl Pelini wasn't available after the scrimmage… WR Daniel McKinney was wearing a white jersey for the second straight day, instead of his usual green "no-contact" outfit. He has yet to participate in team dills, and isn't expected to play in the Spring Game… Wright mentioned that he is happy with the development of RB Tony Moore and some of the younger backs… For the third straight practice, a Cardinal Gibbons High School coach was in attendance. Gibbons is the home to a handful of Division-1 prospects this year.

Quez is getting his snaps. I'm normally allowed to watch just the tail end of practice, and that's only a few series, so if he doesn't play, there isn't much to say.

Pelini was very complimentary of Johnson recently, saying he was so much further ahead than he thought. So I think that's a pretty good sign.

Quez looks like a guy that can take the rigors of running the ball a dozen in a game and not be worn down by the 4th q.... the dude is built like a brick house

For the first time in a while, I'm actually excited about our quarterback situation.
