FAU "Game Day" Traditions...

Putting a lie on Howard would require Athletics being on board because they lock up the stadium. Le'ts put lots of FAU colored leis on Owlsley, maybe attach a sign that says something simple like "Beat Miami" so people know where we're going with this.

So lets decorate Howard after a win. We will already be in the stadium and if they are small enough they can be shoved in a pocket.

Or he can be decorated as you enter for good luck.

I remember my frosh year, in 2010, the band would walk around campus the Friday night before a home game. Lots of students would come down from their dorm and listen to the music.
Why not we do something like that? And SAA could give out their "beat shirts" by the rec/alumni center, a fraternity and sorority could can give an offering to the Owlsley statue, and the cheer team and band perform for the students.
It's not that hard, and not expensive at all. I don't understand why we don't do this more often. The Friday night before a home game have you huge pep rally/party in that plaza area.

Jackpot!..I've wanted to do this for a few years now. I just haven't known who to contact about it. Plus, SAA or SG likes handing the t-shirts out on Thursday nights so it would be counter productive to have events on both nights. My ideal thought would be to advertise the crap out of the rally and let everyone know where it starts and that it ends at the Stadium where SAA will hand out the shirts. The rallies don't really happen any more since FAUtuba, Dmarkey and myself graduated. Although I've worked the band the past couple years after graduation, it just hasn't happened.

I wanted the dance team and cheer leaders to come out as well, but it wouldn't be a "uniform" event. The original idea was just to go around in regular clothes and get people pumped for the games the night before. Cheer and dance could come and just help with the cheers/chants and maybe perform a little. I think it could become something special, especially because we now have a stadium.

BTW- I can't tell you how many people's assess I've seen from them mooning the band from their window, lol.

Those Friday night rallies were all student run. The band kids would meet up somewhere wearing FAU gear and play and get people excited. These were fun ways to teach people the school songs and of course "owl fingers." These are some of my favorite memories of being in band.

It's sad to hear these things don't happen, especially with the on campus stadium. It always seems like SAA/SG/Greeks are all out to "start traditions" and gain credit for something becoming popular. If all these groups would talk to each other and work with the captains/leaders of the spirit groups and get everyone involved on each event they would be more successful and become "traditions!"

The cheer and dance teams I'm sure have captains and can get people to come out, the band has multiple leadership and Greek organizations (Kappa Kappa Psi, etc.) to organize people to go out and play. But these leaders need to communicate with SGA/SAA/etc.

Re: FAU "Game Day" Traditions...

Years ago I suggested the "Owl Walk" before games.  Maybe it does not work logistically, but my idea was to have the team walk down the breezeway to the stadium, fans lining the breezeway cheering and the band playing.  Players could touch the owl statue near the rec center as they walk by, kind of like Clemson touches that rock and Florida touches the gator in the locker room, etc.

They did that under Schnellenberger…here's a shot of the players and a "well known" former Owl passing by for the Stadium Opener:

They still do that, I believe. The only thing that's missing is "fans lining the breezeway cheering." There's some of that near the stadium but not like what you're picturing.

Since we don't get a lot of ESPN time/press the players don't become celebrities that people line up to get a glimpse of the way they might line up to see, say, Johnny Manziel after he took down Alabama.

Re: FAU "Game Day" Traditions...

They don't rub the owl any more because the team gets off the bus right in front of the stadium. Nice idea but the fans just didn't support it. The first game was a truly awesome experience because the breezeway was PACKED with people tailgating but there was not ONE person tailgating out there by the 3rd or 4th game.

Re: FAU "Game Day" Traditions...

FWIW, I rub the Victory Bell every time I enter the student section in the Burrow, and on gamedays I rub either the beak or wing of the Owlsley statue.
I think we just need to educate the rest of the students and the rest of the almuni about the traditions we already have. That falls on SGA and SAA, who have done all that they can do without the help of Athletics. Time for Athletics to step up.
