FAU not ready for stadium financing plan; but hopeful project remains on time

I think they should plant money trees on campus and harvest them.

Where do you all think $65M comes from, the sky?  Why do so many feel entitled to just have this kind of money bestowed on them as a fan?

Don't join the alumni association or donate any kind of money, that will help.  Take the money you save by not donating to FAU and buy a clue.

Apparently you can build a high school stadium in Allen High School, suburbs of Dallas, Texas for $ 60 mil. And they also got public funding.  :-\

I went to highschool in Southlake, Texas and we built a stadium that seats 22,000 and costs millions.  Thats what I dont get…a University in Boca Raton cant match my high school in the middle of Texas?  C'mon.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Did we even try for the stimulus money, even as only the $10M starter fund to jump start this thing and create LOTS of construction jobs in S. FL?

Anyhow, I hope and PRAY this thing gets done, one way or another but it does seem quite rediculous that a STATE PUBLIC INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING has to go entirely private for funding while pro sports routinely get public funding for their profit palaces.

It doesn't matter if it's a HS stadium or an elementary school stadium or a college stadium.  The concept is the same…you have to have a way to pay for it.  This HS obviously has the public funding and public support in order to show they can pay for it.

Why doesn't FAU get public funding for the stadium?  The public has not shown that it wants to support FAU athletics.  One only needs to go to any FAU athletic event to see this.  This HS probably will have 18k fans in their 18k seat stadium.  Two-time Bowl champion FAU, gets 10k.  The numbers do not add up for strong public support.  That's not a knock on anyone, that's just reality, and financing is based on reality.

The biggest hurdle we have is the fanbase.  Private funding is the quickest way to get this done because if we wait for public financing we could be waiting a very long time.

why don't you swamp Angelos inbox with a bunch of emails complaining.
He needs to hear this from the fans.

Check out fauowlaccess story, it seems that fau has struck a deal with Regions BANK on the financing of the stadium. Let's all cross our fingers collectively. :o :o :o

Well it doesn't exactly say they struck a deal, just that they have chosen their bid and they will negotiate a deal with them. Still, it sounds very positive.  I'm not getting too excited just yet, but it certainly seems like this long stadium quest is finally reaching then end.  ;D

Re: FAU not ready for stadium financing plan; but hopeful project remains on time

They just chose a favorite out of the pool that submitted proposals for consideration…

"June 16th or 17th they'll have the ultimate and final approval on the financing plan", said Athletic Director Craig Angelos.

"We hope that everything is agreed to by all parties by that time so that can be the final word, although the Board of Governors will ultimately have to approve the financing plan."

On a side note:

With the 6M from the housing deal for Innovation Village receiving allocation approval, there is yet potentially another silver lining to what some consider a "cloud" casting doubt on the finality of our long awaited Stadium:

"We've got another 11M in potential business to business opportunities", said Associate AD for Development Terry Mohajir.

"And then the naming and rights, and all the sub naming rights, would be on top of that."

The B2B opportunities would have to go through the required legal review and fit into the plan, but 17M is quite a potential chunk of change towards a 62M stadium project - without naming rights being included.

1M has been tossed out as a desirable figure for main naming rights.

This deal WILL get done…just a matter of when.

I read that FAU has to start construction in June for the Owls to play their 2011 home opener on campus. If they're not even approving their financing plan until mid-June, I don't see construction starting in time. What a shame.

That's why they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars clearing the land and doing everything possible in advance.  They have always known the June date so they have prepared for that date and my understanding is that they can put a shovel in the ground as soon as the BoG approves at that meeting.

My biggest concern is if we have a hurricane or horrible weather this summer, there will not be any time to make that up and it will be delayed.  That is what could delay it into the season IMO.
