FAU QB Smith downplays talk of NFL

If he continues the numbers he has been putting up, continues the no INTs and good decision making (throwing the ball away instead of a sack….something Tebow rarely does) then I could see him maybe getting drafted.  Unsigned free agent with a run around just like our guys last year is more likely, finally ending up in Canada, Arena, or one of the new football leagues (AAFL, UNGL, New USFL).

Re: FAU QB Smith downplays talk of NFL

He has been too sporadic against top competition. He played great early last year against Texas and then tailed off in the second half. He did pretty well against S. Carolina, but he still has not been consistent over the course of the entire season.

We also have to remember that there are lots of good QBs that have been successful at BCS programs and then transferred down or to other programs I think of guys like Rhett Bomar who was at Oklahoma went to Sam Houston State and finally got drafted by NYG last year in the 5th round and Mitch Mustain who had great success at Arkansas before transferring to USC. Guys like this will often get looks over a guy like Rusty even though they are out of the spotlight. There will also always be guys who played back-up at a BCS program behind a stud and still get drafted either 7th round or go as UFA's. Competition is deep in order to be an NFL QB. One thing Rusty has is experience and lots of it. This should go a long way for him. I don't know that he gets drafted, but he should get signed as an UFA and have a real shot at making a roster.

Then you have guys that are simply dedicated like Kurt Warner…played at Northern Iowa (FCS) but never even got close to starting until his senior year, got a tryout with Green Bay but was cut and had to build up his resume.  At least Rusty has a good resume as a QB, and I wish they kept stats that differentiated incomplete passes between drops and bad passes because if he was surrounded by NFL quality WRs I think his QB rating would be a lot higher than it is.  He has already shown that, even with an FAU offensive line (no offense line guys) he was able to not get sacked against some great Defenses.  Give him an NFL line and I think he would feel even more secure in the pocket and reduce his bad throws, which usually came under pressure.

You've got to give Rusty some props for the mere fact that there are no audibles from the sidelines.  10th rated offense - he seems to be calling a great game!!!!

I say he gets drafted mid to late rounds.

http://www.draftsite.com/nfl/2010mock.htm

180. Arizona Cardinals Arizona Rusty Smith QB 6'5" 212 Florida Atlantic

Compensatory Picks Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5 Round 6 Round 7

226. Jason Harmon TE 6'3" 215 Florida Atlantic

not sure what the compensatory picks mean. Harmon will get drafted or he won't?

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

This site is and has always been meaningless. They don't even list Sam Bradford on their mock draft board. Even with his chronic shoulder injuries, he is still a 1st round pick.

There are so many variables between now and April that affect if and when he gets drafted. As long as he gets an invite to the NFL combine, he's got a shot.

Great to hear the sound of maturity from Rusty. Play the season and then see what happens with the NFL. Got his priorities right!

I agree. He also has struck me as a quality guy, very decent. I have no idea what like after FAU will be like for him, but I certainly wish him the very best.

Re: FAU QB Smith downplays talk of NFL

Rusty is doing what he needs to be doing…even with the way the season started he kept his mind set right and he is showing maturity.  Last year all the talk about being a 1st round pick became a distraction and Rusty is not allowing it to become one this season…that alone speaks volume to his character & what he can bring to a team.

He is putting the team first and letting the chips fall where they may.
