FAU's short week and Souverain

BOCA RATON ? Florida Atlantic is busy getting ready for its Thursday game against Oklahoma State and the Owls can't even look to coach Howard Schnellenberger for pointers.
Schnellenberger has been a head coach for 20 years but said he had never had to prepare for a Thursday night game that wasn't a season opener.
"I'm scuffling around trying to figure out what's the best thing to do in this situation," Schnellenberger said.
FAU has played on Thursday night twice in program history. Its 2002 loss at South Florida and 2003 upset victory at Middle Tennessee were season openers. The Owls play host to the Cowboys at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dolphins Stadium after falling to Kansas 30-19 on Saturday.
The quick turnaround has created some problems for FAU.
The game film of Oklahoma State's narrow victory against Montana State didn't arrive until late Sunday evening, which delayed the Owls' practice until that night.
And quarterback Danny Embick said he hasn't even had to time to watch film of the Owls' offense in action against Kansas.
"I have only seen the first quarter of our game," Embick said.
On Tuesday, FAU went through its normal Thursday practice, which is usually light and held with players not wearing shoulder pads. The Owls have practiced for just a few hours in pads this week.
"I've always had a belief that, when in doubt, under-practice instead of over-practice," Schnellenberger said.
Today the Owls will hold their walk-through at the Oxley Practice Fields. Oklahoma State, which hasn't played a regular-season game on Thursday since 1986, will hold a light practice at Dolphins Stadium.
Proposals filed: FAU received three proposals for a domed stadium and retail village by the Sept. 1 deadline, Athletic Director Craig Angelos said.
The next step is to review the proposals to decide if they are worth pursuing.
"The ones we received were very interesting and went into a lot of detail," Angelos said.
Souverian may see action: Schnellenberger said reserve quarterback McKinson Souverain, a redshirt freshman from Atlantic High School, likely will see action vs. Oklahoma State.
"We'll go back to our basic plan and I have every inclination to put him in this week," Schnellenberger said
Schnellenberger often will put the backup quarterback in for a series regardless of how the starter is doing just to give to keep the reserve sharp.
In FAU's 30-19 loss to Kansas, Schnellenberger kept Embick in the whole game.
"I went with a real gut felling on that one," Schnellenberger said. "I had planned to play Souverain, but as it unfolded I thought I would be setting him back if he had been put in."
