Man, we GOTTA GET SOME SIZE at the DT position. Unless you are super quick like Coley,
270 (OR 290 FOR THAT MATTER!) WON'T CUT IT, THE LB'S ARE GONNA GET PUNISHED AND THEY ARE GONNA RUN ON US!

You win in the trenches.

problem is athletic 300 lb guys dont grow on trees.  DT is one of the toughest if not the toughest postition to recruit at our level.

Which is probably why UTEP uses a 3-4 and precisely why we did for a while as well at the end of Schnelley's tenure.

3-4 puts more pressure on the big men.
You need a dominating NT and two guys that are great a two gap D on either side of that NT.

Yup - ALL THREE DL (DE's TOO) must be BIG to handle 5 OL coming at 'em! WE definately don't have that!

I would be speculating, but I think he switched to 3-4 in order to put more speed on the field in an effort to limit the spread offenses we were facing week in and week out.

3-4 is used when have three domingating big men who can do the job of 4 and let you used more speed and hide blitz packages better.
It's why Bama uses it. To combat the spread you don't need 3-4 because Most LB's can't cover WR's any ways do 4-3 or 3-4 you are left with the same issues.
FAU pretty much runs 4-2-5 to combat the spread.
Our Nicole just become our base D.

Our D line (DT's) needs to be much bigger to get a better push into the backfield to disrupt runs and harrass the qb using either less blitzes or when we are blitzing, to occupy the blockers so the blitzers are running at the qb (anyone see the Houston /Louisville game this week?!). The bigger (300 lb. MINIMUM) also keep the lb's free to make the tackles vs. the runs. If a safety leads the team in tackles you are in trouble already.

Stops IN THE BACKFIELD, or initial hits at minimum are needed THERE, not 5-10 yards in OUR defensive backfield.

29 points allowed in the 2nd half, well over 600 yards allowed overall. AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Did not know we were playing Clemson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, did ya'll realize the ODU qb was a WR even last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
