I had the privileged of taking seven women to Pensacola Florida as the first FAU Women flag football team to ever participate in a tournament.  We arrived at UWF around 5:00PM Central Time and took a ride around their 16 Acre Campus, it was beautiful.  After check in we noticed to white vans pull in and the ladies of FAMU (this team has been around for over 15 years and has won national titles) came out decked out from head to toe in FAMU "Simply Marvelous" Gear, it was a sight to see.  Our team just watched in awe and one of the players turns around looks at our team and says "that's going to be the owls next year, don't worry we will get more girls".  I loved hearing that!

The Tournament featured FAMU, USF, UWF, Sam Houston, Southern LA, Arkansas Tech, Valdosta State, and one more other school whose name escapes me.  Our pool was against Sam Houston (Est. in 1999) and Arkansas Tech (They received 3rd place last year).  Our first game was against a very disciplined Sam Houston team.  We opened our defensive series with an interception and returned it to about the 10 yard line, but failed to scored.  We ended up losing 40-0.  The team learned a lot and mind you this was the first time they had all played a real game together.

Our second game was against Arkansas Tech.  We opened the game with a 70 yard hook and ladder play for a touchdown!  We had a great game physically but had a key injury.  Our second fastest player had hurt her knee during the Sam Houston game and we had to switch her to blocker and outside linebacker, this hurt us a lot.  We lost the game 20-15.

Overall, the team had a great experience and really took a lot out of the experience and meeting other people from other schools.  They definitely noticed that our Campus Recreation program in second to none and our new facilities are not to be taken for granted.  We are planning to hold tryouts in the spring.  If anyone has any sponsorship opportunities please let me know we have to purchase flags, footballs, and uniforms!
