FIU's Shula Bowl take on future goals.

If you thought the first one was funny. Look at this. ;D :D

This is the FIU college newspaper "The Beacon".

FAU didn't get this cocky after they went 11-3 in season 3 and got to the AA semi finals and 9-3 in year 4.

I tried posting the link but it was too long and got cutoff.

Football team's season not easy to gauge

With the football program's fourth season coming to and end, it is somewhat complicated to determine if this season, albeit a losing one, was in any way promising for the future.

The win/loss record aside, this season has seen its share of good, bad and even its share of ugly.

Just to recap, here are some positive and negative things the team has seen this season as of Dec. 1.

The Good:

The 52-6 romp of local rival Florida Atlantic is arguably the best thing to happen to this team. Not only did the Golden Panthers get their first-ever victory over the Fighting Owls, FIU also got an edge in recruiting for this season. If you're a high school recruit teetering between FAU and FIU, the latest result should seal your choice. Would you play for a team on the losing end of a 52-6 final score?

The win at Western Kentucky was also a good sign for the program. It was just three years ago that WKU routed the inaugural FIU football team 56-7. It was also in this victory that FIU showed it could hold on to a late lead ?- something that has hurt the team in the past.

The win at Louisiana-Monroe was yet another example that showed FIU holding on to a lead and showed that FIU can go toe-to-toe with the best team in the Sun Belt Conference (at the time).

The loss against North Texas showed that FIU's defense can hold down a tough rushing attack. The Golden Panthers held the two-headed monster rushing attack of UNT's Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas (the 2003 and 2004 NCAA rushing champion, respectively) to a combined 136.

Finally, this may be a stretch, but the 31-25 loss at Kansas State did show the team they can play up to par with teams from big-time conferences.

Wow! After one win in 4 tries, we're so far in FIU's rear view mirror that the Miami Hurricanes need to watch their butts! They're next.

The funny thing is that some on their board were asking for the coach and AD's head because the seniors were underachieving. I'm glad we helped save Strock's job.

Yep! And that's the way all sports fans (aside from maybe the Chicago Cubs fans who believe a curse is responsible for their misery, lol!!!) are across the nation and all over the world. If the tables were turned, FAU fans as well as football fans would've been saying that Coach Schnelly was too old and all washed up. But winning changes EVERYTHING! Unfortunately, sports fans tend to have very short-term memories and the difference between success and failure is measured by wins and losses. Good luck to your team in the future and I hope both FIU and FAU (together) can achieve the short-term success that UCF and USF have achieved in Div. I-A and in the long-term, WE can be as successful as UF, FSU, and UM!
P.S. One down…..two more to go to close the gap! Here's to the SHULA BOWL rivalry!! ;D :o ;D

But we have been there ARod. In 2002 when we won 2 games. Then again this past season with only two wins. Do we second guess the coaches? Of course we do. What sport fans don't have all the answers sitting at home on a Saturday afternoon. But nobody called for coach Schnelly's or AD Angelos job. The FAU fans kept focused on the bigger picture of building a program. Last year at FIU it was "wait till next year when they are seniors". My guess is that some of your folks were upset that you had the seniors this year and wasn't winning. The way you lost some of the games were tough losses. You guys should have won. Maybe that's why coaching came into play.

BTW..FAU loaned FIU something of ours to keep in your trophy case and we want it back! ;D 8-)

Actually there is a big difference. You guys scattered a few important wins in there relatively early on in the programs history. And despite a few down seasons, you guys have already had winning seasons.
We, on the other hand, were losing due to dumb mistakes on our own part and in situations that looked as if we weren't fully prepared before taking the field. In other words, we weren't always losing because of the competition…..we were beating ourselves!
Basically, what I'm saying is that the constant wins don't give you guys a chance to 2nd guess the coaches! We have had lots of time to absorb the losses and after awhile the negativity started to be secreted in the form of 2nd guessing the decisions that were being made from the top.
P.S. Just got an e-mail from "THE SHULA TROPHY" and it says it likes it's new home much better!! It also said the co-eds were much better looking down here… ;D :o ;D…LMAO!!!

Arod, I think O.G.s point was that in two seasons where we only won 2 games apiece, we don't agree that we had "constant wins" that didn't allow for us to second guess our coaches. I think it's more that we believe our players have a lot of heart….they don't always win, but they always give it their best. And we're willing to wait it out and see what next season can bring.

That was a good one..ROFLMAO!!!!

But the trophy is still young. We have some nice looking retirees who would love to take care of the "young thang" for awhile.

Tangygirl,
Thanks for your response. However, I think my statement neglected to acknowledge that alot of the FIU fans frustration didn't really start to set in until Year #3. That's when some fans started to question where the growth of the program was going and whether any real discipline was being taught. Coincidentally, you guys (FAU) had a pretty successful season that same year. Looking at the whole picture, I don't think FIU fans were realistic because we needed to realize that our program was fresh and brand new. I'd give any new program at least 5 good years and look ahead from that point. The success that FAU was having may have very well fueled the fire, but like I said before, winning does wonders for any program. And I'll leave it at that. ;D

No sweat Arod - and I get what you are saying now. We all knew this would be a rebuilding year for FAU, but I don't think that made our losses sting any less. We're just sitting on our hands and hoping this team can put together a better season next year.

And take back our Trophy!

I'd say that our early success played a part in the FIU fans expectations. We will grow old together in this part of the state. Looking forward about 5 more years can only be encouraging for both teams.

tangygirl, we can play them in DodgeBall or something till next year's return of OUR trophy.. :);D

Anybody can play. "If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball"…. ;D
