Florida Atlantic hires Stan Drayton

The Owls have their man.

Ohio State assistant coach Stan Drayton will be the next head coach at Florida Atlantic. The Owls elected not to retain interim head coach Brian Wright despite his success under tough circumstances, instead deciding it best to pick a candidate from outside the program. That's Drayton, who has some history with FAU athletics director Pat Chun.

Before coming to Florida Atlantic in 2012, Chun spent 15 years working in the Ohio State athletics department. Drayton had been at OSU since 2011, where he coached wide receivers and…

Drayton had been at OSU since 2011, where he coached wide receivers and running backs, and in 2013 became the Assistant Head Coach on Offense.

Drayton has more than two decades of coaching experience and he has worked in the southeast, including two separate stints at Florida. He has also worked at both Mississippi State and Tennessee.

He got his start in coaching at Allegheny College – his alma mater – in 1993. He had been the most prolific rusher in Division III history, and not surprisingly his coaching roles at various stops have included overseeing that position. He left Allegheny for Eastern Michigan and followed that with coaching stints at Pennsylvania, Villanova and Bowling Green.

He then spent a few years as an offensive quality control coach for the Packers before returning to the college ranks in 2004. Florida Atlantic is his first head coaching opportunity.

Hmmm.  Could be nothing more than a writer who was reading rumors on Twitter and was trying to have a story ready once the news broke….kind of like when news outlets have celebrity obituaries done years in advance just to have it ready to go.  Still, this story is getting unnecessarily weird.
