I heard all these same comments last year. The French Quarter and areas around Canal Street, waterfront and hotels are fine. Wed walked through there day and late night and had no troubles.

BUT, don't get conned by those people looking to give you a free hate or shirt while acting as if they are part of some type of tourism authority. It is a scam and they want money. Just walk away.

Seems like a real nice place to be walking around with a load of cash in your pocket…


NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Police used chemical spray and stun guns Thursday as dozens of protesters seeking to halt the demolition of 4,500 public housing units tried to force their way through an iron gate at City Hall.
One woman was sprayed with chemicals and dragged from the gates. She was taken away on a stretcher by emergency officials. Before that, the woman was seen pouring water from a bottle into her eyes and weeping.

Another woman said she was stunned by officers, and still had what appeared to be a Taser wire hanging from her shirt.

I lived in New Orleans from 1998 - 2001.  Never had any problems.  Katrina has changed things drastically though.

Anyone ever seen the Spike Lee series "When the Levees Broke"

I reccomend it, it will give you great detail about New Orleans culture - good and bad.
