Gornall Missing the Point of Kicking

I hope the kid gets it together….but whichever way you want to cut it, missing XP's is flat out not acceptable on the DI level.

Agreed. And again, it's not like they are being blocked. He just misses them. The kid needs to get it together or pack his bags and head on down to FIU.

Well, crap like this – calling him terrible and saying he should head to FIU – is not going to help him "get it together."  And sending him packing?  Did I actually read that?  What a way to show your support!  I mean, it's one thing to say that we're going to find someone who can do better, but it's another thing altogether to say shape up or get out of town.  He's 3 for 4 on FGs – does that count for anything?  No one player lost that game Saturday.  I saw lots of dropped passes, bad passes, stupid penalties, defensive lapses.  You're seriously going to pin this and the South Carolina loss on the kicker?  Come on, we're all better than this.

You're right. I support Gornall and all his missed FGs and XPTs. In fact, FAU doesn't need to win games, they don't need to score points, who cares, right… as long as they have fun out there.

PLEASE….. It's not like I am pissed at Gornall for missing a 50-yarder. The kid is missing extra points. He is ranked THE worst at extra points (that's not me saying that, that is a factual NCAA stat). You should miss 1 XPT a season at most. He has done it twice within the last two games.

For his sake, I hope Gornall does improve. I hope in the Wyoming game he makes every Xtra point, plus seven FGs. It's not a personal thing against the kid, but ya, if you cannot consistently produce, you shouldn't wear our jersey. I'm sorry that I don't accept failure, but that doesn't mean I am not a fan. I just want the Owls to succeed.

Again, I have to ask this question because kicking is not only about the kicker.

Any idea how the snaps or holds were on those missed extra points??

Re: Gornall Missing the Point of Kicking

I was personal witness to both missed XPs and I'd say that the snaps and holds were fine. No high snap or skipped ball or anything like that, his rhythm was right on, he just shanked them. I don't know how his relationship is with Peterson (the holder) and if Keegan didn't have the laces out or something, but from what I could tell, they were just misses…not even bad contact either.

SC he hit the upright and it almost bounced in and last weekend, it looked good to me, it was windy, perhaps thats why he missed it. Who knows.

At the end of the day, when you decide to play Division 1 college football, you're fair game for critics. I'm sure Ross has tougher skin than some on this board, he knows what he's done, and he knows he should be criticized for it. Man up, go out and make it right, that's all I ask.

FAU is not playing in a "non score keeping, everybody wins" league run by the local YMCA!

No, I could not tell you about the snaps or holds. There was no mention in the media about a bobbled snap and no quotes from anyone about the hold. Maybe it isn't Gornall's fault, but with no indication of blame elsewhere, Gornall is held accountable.

Re: Gornall Missing the Point of Kicking

It's not the criticism that I object to, it's the tactics.  Yeah, it's fair to criticize if he's not doing a good job, but telling him to get out of town (or worse yet, go play for our rival) is a little over the line.  And yes, I'm perfectly aware that this isn't rec league and that they keep score.

Part of it is that he's in a very visible position where mistakes are magnified.  I'm also an FSU fan – been one since the '70s.  I think we're up to Wide Right LXXVIII by now.  You don't think I know about kicking problems? :-\  I also know that none of those Wide Rights and Wide Lefts had to come down to the kicker in the first place if someone else had done their job.

This is what I said, "The kid needs to get it together or pack his bags and head on down to FIU".

So yes, if Gornall continues to miss Extra Points, I would like him off our team and send him down to FIU where he can continue to miss Extra Points as a Golden Panther, and replace Gornall, with someone who makes Extra Points.

I don't see how that is "over the line". Athletes get cut from teams, unproductive employees get fired, and crappy TV shows get canceled. It's not personal, it's business. Produce beneficial results for us or find work somewhere else. I'm sorry if some of you find that cold & unfair or consider me a terrible fan for thinking this way, but I can't praise or support someone, when they're doing a terrible job.

I truly wish Gornall a great game against Wyoming, but if he does miss another XPT, hopefully, Coach will make him ride the bench the rest of the season, and find a better replacement.
