Grades on the FAU/MTSU Game

Fill in the blanks based on what I listened to and heard back from a couple of people

1) Offense Overall - C+, They made plays, racked up a bunch
of yards but couldn't bring it home.

2) O-Line - D+, From game one this season it has been a gradual
improvement and last night the needed to get it
done and couldn't

3) RB's & WR - B+, The RB's did what they could they need
blocking to make plays, but both RB's and
WR's are getting better and better are
definitely gong to be a threat as they
continue to play.

4) QB - D+ - When it counts there performance is sloppy at best.
Not connecting with wide open receivers and you
have the time, your head is somewhere but it sure
isn't in that game.

5) Defense Overall - B, The D stopped some big time momentum
but most seemed as though they were
sleeping on the job. The runs to the
house especially at the end of the game
was pitiful.

6) D-Line - B+, It sounded like they were holding there own for
the most part.
can't make a comment

7) LB, Corners & Safety's - C, Not bad but let the big ones get
away from them. Unfortunately they
hurt the most.

8) Special Teams - D-, O.K. the season is almost over and they
are still in Na Na land. Not that the FG
would have one the game but it gives a
team momentum and something to build
on. You work your butt off getting down
there at least punch it over.

9) Coaching - D -, Just when you thought it was safe to go out
and play it starts to rain. Play calling sucked.
I have a hard time believing they prepared
for this game the way they should have. It's
almost like these guys don't communicate with
each other. What else is there to say.

10) Overall Team Grade - C, This was a very winnable game, we
blew it and made it very easy for
MTSU. They put our team to the test
and we failed miserably.

Grades on the FAU/MTSU Game

Special teams has been horrible for most of the year and proved it again yesterday, finding the up-rights still appears to be challenge and giving up a Kick-off return to start the second half :P These are the things that hurt worse when you include our offensive offense.

There was definetely some bad play calling, especially the drive that ended at the goal line. Lack of execution could be the reason for some of the play calling, if we had a QB that could complete more the 50% of his passes, it could give us more options in those type of situations.

It comes down to, not being able to protect the pigskin.

I made my grade in another thread of C, C- as an overall grade. Which leaves room for improvements all categories.

Disagree with Talon…what would you give thier team as far as grades??? They only made a few big plays…we gave the game away with three critical errors…

We had more yards, more first downs, and ran thirty more plays…

here is the dealio from Ted Hutton…i have to agree with him:

"Don?t pin this on the defense. The only legitimate score they gave up was the first one, on an 85-yard drive. The next TD came after Rusty Smith?s fumble gave the Raiders the ball at the FAU 28. The next was the kickoff return for TD, the next the fumble return, and the final one in the last minute, on Eugene Gross 56-yard run on a play that shouldn?t have happened."

Not much better then FAU but they won. It really doesn't matter if you had five times as many yards, more first downs, or what ever else. The gun goes off after 60 and the guy with the highest score is the winner. I agree that statistically we kicked their butt's all over the field but we made the most mistakes and that is why I graded the way I did and you can grade the way you see it.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that, I believe we should have won that game, but we didn't as unbelievable as it is we made mistakes we shouldn't have made. I even told my wife after listening to the game the score should have a could have easily been 28 - 14 Owls. I still believe that. I guess the bottom line for me is sloppy very very sloppy and this late it shouldn't happen. Of course saying that look what happen top the Bears. O.K. never mind what I said lets just hope the other team comes out to play this week. ;)

The interesting thing is and I made this comment in my Pregame Thoughts - protecting the football was a major key component if the Owls had a chance to win, not only on Saturday, but anytime we step on the gridiron for that matter. This game was very winnable, yet it went to the team that made more positive plays. This was suppose to be a defensive battle which would have been the case had we taken care of the pigskin, plain and simple.

Lets reflect on the season as a hole for a minute, the team has had some flashes of playing good solid football, interlaced with some very sloppy play in the forms of turnovers. During some stretches of play during the season, the team also shown the potential that we can expect form this group of guys. And yes, we all know what happed when the same group of guys that are making these silly mistakes, when they do take care of the football. The players have shown their true potential and what this team is capable of and we also know what happens when they as a group play a complete game, the players are developing nicely and we will continue to witness the inconsistencies during the remainder on the season, what we need to remember and focus on is the POTENTIAL that is there, we have seen it and the players will find the groove that brings it all together.

We have a great bunch of guys with a bunch of them waiting in the wing waiting for their turn. Getting to .500 is still within reach.

Go Owls!!

I agree with you both…we did play sloppy - thats for sure…and its our achilles heal right now…

And our potential is tremendous within the league…you take away the mistakes, and not only are we in and winning the games, we are probably dominant overall…

We have to realize that the league as a whole plays pretty sloppy. Unfortunately I don't like the whole "if only we didn't make mistakes argument." It is one thing if a stupid mistake influences the outcome of a game once in a while. However, for FAU we are not talking about one mistake, we are talking about many and we are talking about making mistakes in almost every game. The mistakes are part of this team. The point is this…good teams don't make mistakes…poor teams do. That is the difference between good teams and bad teams. Good teams that make lots of mistakes are known as bad teams. Right now FAU is a pretty bad team. Until this team stops making mistakes it will remain that way. GO OWLS!!!
