Here's one GameDay tradition I'd like to see us adopt

Post

When the Clemson Tigers run out onto the field, they release a flurry of school spirit balloons into the sky…

Via Stadium Journey

Imagine driving on I-95 and seeing a red and blue "cloud" rising over our campus.

I know we shouldn't "borrow" anybody else's traditions but we tried to train an owl to fly around the stadium so... yeah. And this is definitely easier than that.

When I started reading this I thought you were going to suggest rubbing Howard's Rock, which would be an overly blatant ripoff. The balloons however, are a nice idea, especially if they're done in the scale thatClemson does. Releasing a few hundred would look lame, it'd have to be done right.

My guess is that we can't do that due to the airport though

…and also since we have a lot of ocean studies at FAU, they probably won't want the potential of thousands of balloons falling back into the ocean and causing issues with wildlife, etc.  It looks cool though.

It would probably be more of an airport issue, as they make a lot of ballons now that are biodegradable.  It would be really cool to see the "red and blue cloud" though.

I thought the Owl Walk was a cool tradition the first year of the stadium. The players led by coaches walking down the breezeway while touching the Owlsley statue's outstretched wing outside the rec center. Wonder why they stopped doing that..

…because Howard started it and Pelini didn't want to do anything Howard started.  That BS has got to stop!  Every time someone new comes in they cannot abandon traditions and start new things.  They certainly should add to them and make them better, but trying to change everything is not cool.

I would say it was more the Rat's Mouth moving closer to the stadium. But it is frustrating that Pelini wanted little to do with the previous regime and traditions.

I think for Owl walk we have now, with the bus dropping the players off in front of the Rat's Mouth works just fine.

As for an entrance into the stadium, I really wish we still had that live owl. What happened to that idea?

I think I heard somewhere some animal rights activist threaten to sue us.

I know the university would probably claim its an airport issue but they have absolutely no problem shooting off fireworks for the galas at the stadium there so it's a b***s*** excuse. If they want to do something by the airport they can just call the airport and say, "Here's the timeslot we're doing this; please tell your planes to circle for a couple minutes before they come down." Because, again, they've done it.

When I was at FAU all I heard were these kind of excuses which is why I was always happy to see the change of the guard and somebody with initiative come in and say things like, "Hey, why don't we turn the southeast section of the stadium into The Cove?"

Well, it did feel forced and we didn't have the critical mass to make it look as cool as the big boy universities but yes, we should have kept doing it. And I 1000% agree with you about new people coming in and screwing with our traditions. For instance, I'm getting the vibe like they're trying to change us to a "red first, blue secondary" culture here and they need a reality check.

From the Visual Standards Guide that they reference to justify using the stupid full owl logo instead of the owl head: "FAU Blue is the dominant color in all University communications. FAU Red is to be used as a complement to FAU Blue and should never be the dominant color."

I really liked that idea even though I don't remember ever seeing it actually work out in person despite attending as many home games as I could. I remember them coming up to me with the live owl in the Burrow though.

Animal rights activist threatened to sue us, really? On what grounds? LawOwl, any thoughts on that? Never heard that training a bird to fly around an area is a crime.

Charlie Kelly would know since he's an expert in bird law.  :Big-Grin:

Pelini was not the only one trying to distance themselves from Howard and his contributions and traditions.
