Highlights from Media Day with Coach and David Hinds
Bottom line: He expects the team to play with "reckless abandon", sees the offense revolving around Morris (who he thinks could go pro) with a better and deeper O-line to support that premise, and expects Wilbert to be the starter at present.
Here are some highlights of the Q&A:
On team’s attitude heading into 2011 - Schnellenberger
“Its been a long offseason for us…all of us are disappointed. These things are difficult at any time but terribly difficult to deal with when you’ve been to the mountain. We look forward to the 2011 season coming up."
***He was very upbeat on having so many players in Summer session.
On the brutal early slate - Schnellenberger & Hinds
“As far as being on the road for the first five games, that’s old hat for us. We do that just like everybody else because we think it is important for our bottom line, try and get a win against a very good team, and learn how to play at the highest level. We look forward to playing against some of the best teams in America.” - Schnellenberger
“We’re all spending time studying and watching film on these guys. Our mind set is to come out victorious no matter what…our team is growing.” - Hinds
On the new coaches in the league - Schnellenberger
“It’s like it always is in football. There's going to be turnover. All of these guys are equally prepared to come in and start the development of their team.”
On possibly being his last season - Schnellenberger
“We (coaches) have said all along that we want to coach as long as it is productive and we are making progress."
"Don’t know when that is going to happen (last season). Could be soon, could be later.
"It’s been 13 years since I took on this responsibility…it’s been a great time. Looking forward to getting this season started and where we can take it.”
On naming a starting QB - Schnellenberger
“We always do it 10 days before the opening game. We have four winning quarterbacks, the way I see it.
“It looks like Graham has separated a little bit but we’ve got time for Kooi to catch up.”
“He’s got the talent to catch him and surpass him, but that’s got to come from him.”
On injuries - Schnellenberger
“Everybody’s healed up, we’re going to be ok.”
On Alfred Morris - Schnellenberger
“Determination, conditioning and knowledge of the game (makes him a great player). His running style, will to win and leadership on the team. In this day and time you don’t see a lot of running backs that have the style of running that is a consistent style that can carry the team. He’s a power back with good power and good hands. A real key player. Somebody I think has a real good chance of playing at the next level."
"Going to be the key to our football team this year."
On the offensive line - Schnellenberger
"They’ve gone ahead from young players who needed experience…to those who can handle an offense."
On the playing style he sees - Schnellenberger
“I am expecting to have a better ‘reckless abandon’ type football team.”

That being said it SHOULD open up the passing lanes for our TE/WR's. Unfortuantely that is our weakest point on Offense with a new QB and new WR/TE's. Those 2 positions need to step up quick.
I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

Everyone and thier brother is going to try and close the holes for Morris to run thru since hes our only proven threat. The Oline has another huge challange to try and get him space. He doesnt need much but he does need it.

Good points…a couple of comments…
For the first time, HS did not mention the TE position; or WR for that matter…was this by choice??
Secondly, he talked positiviely about the OL…basically compared them to what we had a few years ago but deeper…they have some playing time under thier belts now.
Only time will tell how valid that is though given the passing situation, as you mention.
