If I were coach I would....

Thought this would be an interesting post to have.  As an owl fan who dates back to that miserable slippery rock game, I must say this is the worst disciplined owl team in its short history. If I were coach I would do these two things.

1) Skip regular practices for a few days and instead make the whole team go camping.  These players are not on the same page and its not due to a lack of  talent or experince.  They all just need to mentally get on the same page as a unit and it isn't happening at practice.

2) Start putting in the younger players now for next season.  We need to start developing some more leaders and star players.  We need that big play running back.  We also need to know who is going to be teh leaders on defense next year.

While I pretty much agree with your two points I must question your judgment on starting this thread… do you really want to open this can of worms???? I think we have beat it to death on other threads…

Welcome back to the board by the way…

Re: If I were coach I would....

I would agree that it would be nice to start some of the younger guys for experience, but I don't think it makes sense to waste a red-shirt now.

There are other players that could benefit with more playing time & you just might start seeing VanCamp taking some snaps in the 3rd Qrt, which was a given in the early years for the back-up QB to play some in the 3rd.

The coaches are in a tough position & Howard is very loyal to his players (seniors especially).  You can't send any type of sign that you (coaches) have given-up on the season - that would set a bad example to the players.

You just need to continue to fight the battles & believe in yourself, your teammates & the coaches.  Focus on the little things & then one good thing will finally ignite some good vibes & good things will start to happen.

Just maybe - these tough times will force the players to become closer as a team & new leaders will surface.

Having seen the younger guys play, there really aren't many who appear to be ready (or any better than the guys on the field). As Ted said, FAU gets recruits who need about 2 years before they're field-ready.

Consider our highest-touted recruits. Amos Wood has dropped a few balls. Yourhighness Morgan is still trying to get the rhythm of the faster college defense. He's played some second team in practice and done well but he's not the second coming of Frantz Joseph yet.

I'll tell you who has impressed me though. David Kooi, who can get out of bad situations pretty quickly. Xavier Stinson is a workhorse that very much reminds me of our senior RBs. And Alex Pattee has swatted down balls and made big tackles. Still, he's undersized. They all are. Kooi is like Gumby and could be snapped in half easily.

But you're talking about the the RS freshmen and the sophomores I'm sure, not the RS freshmen.

Re: If I were coach I would....

I have had the opportunity to see the last two Tuesday night games that OWLS have played on ESPN and have some questions. Why are they not using a power set on third short with Willie Rose (FB) & Alfred Morris at (RB), you can run or pass out of this set with better blocking than Edgecomb can provide? Why are you recruiting players that need two years before they are field ready, you recruit a player to play not to sit? Why are the coaches still shuffling the O-line you recruit a guard, tackle & center to play their respected positions. If Rusty is still hurt and the coaches are playing him that tells you the capability of VanCamp as a backup. D-line besides Jervonte Jackson you do not have one in last year’s recruiting class a junior college end and tackle would have been a good recruit. If you can’t get pressure on the opposing team with four D-line what makes the coaches think you can do it with three. When recruiting D-line players you recruit players that can come in and push your starter so that they will take their game to the next level. The linebackers are good and I can see a couple of them playing on Sunday. Why are the defensive backs playing so far off the WR instead of in your face man on man coverage? Special team just sucks Leroy is not the best of kickers and this team needs one. Peterson could be a good punter if the line would block. Polo & Holley may look good in practice but in a game you do not want either of these two returning punts. A punt returner needs to be someone that is not scared to take a hit and has the capability to make someone miss them at the last second. Kickoff returner is good but the up blockers need to be more alert.

We don't really take on junior college transfers, do we? Seems to work pretty well for Troy and I think even FIU has a couple now on their O or D line.

Re: If I were coach I would....

Juco guys work well. I speak from being at and following 1-AA Southern Illinois when Superbowl Champion, Juco Transfer, and former Auburn RB Brandon Jacobs was there. He was many in a long line of SIU Juco transfer RBs. It is probably more difficult to get guys for O-line or QB since those positions require a bit more in terms of learning a new system, but WRs, RBs, and defensive players from Jucos can definitely make an impact and in a hurry. In fact SIU went from a doormat in 1-AA to a perennial top five team in a matter of a couple of years. This has been sustained largely due to the recruitment of Juco players.

……………………call in a consultant to tell me what in the He!! is going wrong and how to make it right.

Let me consult.

No discipline. Eliminate the individual attitudes that players on this team have. I really feel that we are one play away from an FIU/Miami moment. Guys simply lose their heads and fall apart during the game. When guys make stupid penalties make sure that they pay the price. Run them and run them and run them more.

In terms of play calling. Too many screens and draws.
