I think most every MSU game is on TV.  More alumni live in the Detroit area than Lansing area so its probably less expensive to go to the game from a travel standpoint.

Comparing FAU's fanbase to MSU's is comparing apples to bananas.

Walty: Yes, comparing FAU's and MSU's fanbase is like comparing apples to bananas. But I think you can agree with the angle I'm taking without having to pick and every little detail to try and find fault. In addition, if alumni in Detroit are waiting to purchase tickets until day-of-game, then walk-up sales will do well. In addition, if the game wasn't on TV, maybe more fans would go.

I wasn't trying to pick every little detail and find fault.  I dont truly understand the 25k fans and I am dissapointed in MSU's fan base.  I just didn't agree with your assesment on the low attendance is all.  I truly wonder what it is and your points just didn't make sense to me.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

FAU AD Angelos made this statement today:

“We believe that the Michigan State faithful will make sure they have a strong presence and that they will fill Ford Field to cheer for their Spartans,” said Craig Angelos, FAU’s director of athletics. “As we continue our marketing and promotions blitz in Metro Detroit, we are confident that there will be a strong showing from the Spartan Nation to come watch their team challenge the Owls from Florida Atlantic.”

We are promoting this game in East Lansing too, right?

TV coverage on ESPN U could impact attendance as well.  Since I live in Dallas, I'm just happy to get the Owls on TV here for once.

To be fair that is about 250 miles compared to 60.
Yes, I understand that. But I think you see what I'm getting at.

How many FAU fans traveled to FIU for the FAU vs. FIU game? The Shula Bowl. Our Rival!  Yes, there are more MSU alumni, students and fans than FAU alumni, students and fans. But FAU vs. MSU is also televised. If you have a family of four people, it's expensive to go to the game, excluding ticket prices. Travel costs, hotel room, hotdogs, popcorn, t-shirts for the kiddos, etc.

Every Big Ten school has every one of its games guaranteed to be shown on live tv due to the Big Ten Network.  I don't know what its availability is outside of the midwest, but pretty much every cable and satellite provider here has it in their base level programming packages.  I believe the game is on ESPNU on Saturday though.

Tom D'Angelo's blog on ticket sales:
Ticket sales for FAU-Michigan State game at Ford Field still lagging despite recent surge | FAU Focus blog: Florida Atlantic University Owls sports | The Palm Beach Post

A recent surge of sales has brought the total number of tickets sold to just more than 25,000, a number that is disappointing for sure, but not nearly as embarrassing as it was a few days ago when about 12,000 had been sold. The slow sales forced FAU to cut the price of many seats to the $19 students are being charged.

At this point for FAU to reach the $2 million mark would take a miracle. With marketing and operational expenses, I don't think FAU will net more the $1 million.

What would you estimate is the typical attendance / gate receipts at an FAU home game?

We announce around 15k per game, sometimes more…but for gate reciepts and actual purchased tix, I'd bet 10k.

People are bashing our AD and program for this move, but even if we ONLY make $1mil, it'll practically pay for our football budget for the year and I bet the attendance at this game matches our home attendance for the year.

Re: Is the rumor true that FAU spent 200K marketing the FAU-MSU game in Det?

I'm sorry, but the MSU fan "FAU is making us play in Detroit, woe is us" attitude is growing old.  I'm so sorry that FAU gave you an extra home game that will be played in the heart of your biggest alumni base.  You get to go watch your team play in a beautiful facility…boo hoo!  So perhaps FAU priced it $10 too high…it's probably still cheaper for their fans in Detroit then making the trip to East Lansing.

All I see from Spartans fans is complaining about having to play poor little FAU.  Well you are the ones that scheduled us in the first place…and then agreed to move the game.  MSU could have said no, play the game in Dolphins Stadium….but I'm sure they were thrilled to get to play in Detroit and save the travel costs.  FAU got into a bind with the stadium delay and thought it was being nice moving the game to Detroit.  Sure we will benefit financially, but MSU gets to play in front of a friendly crowd in a city a short drive from campus, and yet if you read comments from their fans it's like FAU had to twist their arms to get them to play there.
